If he was catching — more than one or two days a week, anyhow — something probably wasn't breaking right. Off to the Cubs he goes now, having an provided able, if underwhelming (ably underwhelming? underwhelmingly able?), alternative to Francisco Álvarez, Travis d'Arnaud, José Lobatón, Patrick Mazeika, James McCann, Devin Mesoraco, Omar Narváez, Michael Peréz, Kevin Plawecki, Wilson Ramos, René Rivera, Gary Sánchez, Chance Sisco (who?), and Luís Torrens.



Had a way of getting hurt whenever he was hitting and staying doggedly healthy during the long periods he wasn't.



Who can tell about these things, but he seemed persistently decent. Perhaps didn't have a personality big enough for his position.

As long term backup catchers go, he hit better than Bob Uecker but wasn't as funny.

He showed just enough for us to say, he wasn't doing a bad job. But when he did a good job, it was occasionally in a big spot that got him back page headlines.

Every team needs a Tomas Nido. I wish him well, hoping one of those occasional good games isn't against the Mets.

He had that sloped posture that old-timey catchers like Yogi Berra had, and it got more pronounced as he aged. You could read the uni number on his back when he was at the plate.

Should Tomás wander into the picture a few years from now the way Dillon Gee did the other night in Arlington, I'll probably react similarly to how I did for Dillon, more delighted in retrospect than I was in real time.

Singhandedly wrecked Washington in an August 20, 2020 game at Citi Field, with a two-run homer in the fourth, followed by a grand slam in the fifth. He hung around afterwards and every fan in attendance left with an autograph.



He looked to be perhaps having a breakthrough season and maybe about to displace Wilson Ramos as the number-one backstop, but he played only two more games before a positive COVID test knocked him off the roster, followed by three weeks in bed and the end of his season. The reporting later suggested it was an ugly bout and he was in real danger once or twice.

Had his moments. Unfortunately they were too few and too far between, He did have a knack for doing something good just when it looked like they were going to get rid of him.

All the best to Tomás, he's had a fine career for a backup , signed a good $$ contract with the Mets a few years back
