Marshmallowmilkshake Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Bummer! Condolences to his family. A member of the Mets Hall of Fame.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 I miss his kind of ballplayer, and by that I mean that he was one tough SOB ... which is basically what his friends called him.Just the simple act of rolling the ball back to the mound following the 3rd out of the half-inning to the opposite side of the opposing pitcher's dugout just so he'd have to walk an extra couple of strides in order to pick it up -- and, yes kids, there once was a time when baseballs continued to be used even if they briefly touched the ground -- was the perfect way to silently say that he didn't show up to the park that day in order to make friends.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2024 Posted April 14, 2024 I had to reverse engineer your post to figure out how you found that thread. You went into the UMDB to find it, it seems. No, I clicked:> Forum Archives> Master Index of Archived Threads> The Baseball ForumAnd typed:> Ctrl F (Windows 'Find' Shortcut)> "Ordoñez"Thanks for finding the Grote Thread. Fun mammaries.Where is "Forum Archives"? I see several specialized archives, but no Forum Archives.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2024 Posted June 6, 2024 Grote's defense was Cooperstown Hall of Fame caliber. I saw a great quote the other day on Facebook. Someone posted that Johnny Bench one said "If Jerry Grote and I had been on the same team, I would have been the third baseman".A true tribute to Grote's defensive prowess.Later
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2024 Posted June 6, 2024 Another Mets legend, gone :-(. This is about the time where they will start perishing in droves.
