Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 15, 2024 Posted March 15, 2024 From my perspective he was an original Met, since the 1971 team was the first one I followed. This was my very first Mets baseball card. It was in the first pack of cards that my parents bought for me:https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/71/71-428Fr.jpg>https://www.tcdb.com/Images/Cards/Baseball/71/71-428Bk.jpg>
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted March 15, 2024 Posted March 15, 2024 Frayed Knot and I visited Lost Nation, Iowa (not much to it) and met a woman who knew McAndrew
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 15, 2024 Posted March 15, 2024 Great shot.I like that McAndrew was part of the story in both 1969 and 1973, with his career starting in 1968 and ending in 1974. Nice timing. Is he the only 1969-er (not counting coaches) who had a son play MLB ball?
Cowtipper Old-Timey Member Posted March 15, 2024 Posted March 15, 2024 Just got done reading through his Fan Memories page the other day. Quite a well-regarded and respected guy.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 15, 2024 Posted March 15, 2024 Pretty damn good for a guy who tended to be treated as depth.A few further thoughts https://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2024/03/15/tidings-at-the-ides/here.

One of the UMDB memories was from a guy who says his father was also from Lost Nation and addsthat McAndrew was in a HS graduating class of nine! Basically there's a decent chance that your local supermarket is on a plot of land larger than L.N., at least the 'town' itself. The postmaster there (she's the one that took the linked picture ... she wasn't very busy) told us the population was around 450-500 before adding 'but of course that includes those in the surrounding area too'.
