Do you suppose such guys develop significantly as pitchers, learn stuff (like new pitches), get lightbulb-going-off advice from new pitching coaches, etc. or just keep plugging away with the tools they have and their luck evens out?



Another way of putting this is: do you suppose the Mets would have reaped the benefits of their later improvements, had they been more patient, or did they have to go through what they went through elsewhere in order to bring such results around?
