You never insult management, even if:

1) It wasn't an insult

2) It wasn't meant to be a insult

and

3) The owner is thin skinned.

A broadcaster that young and that awkward getting dinged for making those comments with that ballpark in the background makes the whole thing feel very AA.

Gary taking up the cause of his colleague and beating the shit out of the Oriole organization on the air right now.

Amazin' that he decided to invoke a parallel in comparing the situation to the Orioles letting Jon Miller go, as if the one precipitated the other. That was over 25 years ago!

Good for Gary calling that horseshit out - I opened this thread either expecting he said something racist/sexist or something perceived as such.

Even when the Yanx, both before and during the Steinbrenner years, pulled this sort of thing, they managed to not act so blatantly.

They chose not to retain Red Barber in the mid-60s after he pointed out the lack of attendance during some meaningless late season

game. Later on they made it clear that they weren't fans of either Tony Kubek and Jim Kaat when they didn't toe the company line

often enough.

But even they were smart enough to not to be so truthful as to the cause-and-effect by going directly to a suspension.

Another broadcaster's comments (From Richard Neer's Facebook page)

... The PR team put the observation in the Game Notes, which play by players use to inject interesting tidbits. Apparently John Angelos, son of the team's owner, objected and ordered Brown off the air on TV. (He worked on radio only) If someone as popular as Brown can be demoted, even for a short period, for an innocuous comment, what happens when there is a serious issue with the team that cries to be addressed?

Most major league owners prefer 'homers', broadcasters who support the squad no matter what and speak no evil. There is a segment of fans who support this approach --- they don't want any criticism of their precious team.

This is the team that let the marvelous Jon Miller go because he dared point out their flaws. Talent has been punished for not wearing Oriole garb.

Such acts by ownership sour the great Baltimore success on the field , a time to be celebrated by fans.

As broadcasters, we owe the audience the truth as we see it. We may be wrong in our predictions or opinions, but it's our job. I believe if we are employed by the team, we should temper our language and couch our critiques diplomatically. But lying to fans and telling them not to believe what they can clearly see benefits no one. They become propaganda ministers with no credibility.
