Steve Blass topped out at 19 Wins for the Pirates

There are 31 correct answers for that square [PITT/20 Wins] but just six of them since the end of the Truman administration.

I was surprised to see that Nyjer Morgan was the most common answer to WAS/MIL

I wouldn't have come up with that name if given six weeks of contemplation and, even

if I did recall him, which teams he played with would have been pure guesswork.

Posted

Oh I remembered him once I heard his name.

But if tasked with thinking up Brewers/Nationals, or even just a Brewer OR a National, my mind would have

landed on Nyjer Morgan about six years from next Tuesday ... maybe.

First one I've solved all week thanks to the Saturday lay up. And I think my all time lowest rarity score.

Hank Greenberg hit 40 or more HRs three times (topped by a season of 58). But what I didn't know was that he lost almost Four Full Seasons to WWII and therefore finished with only 1,628 hits.

It's screwups like this which keep me from finishing 90% of these.

Finally broke a ten or so day losing streak. Most of my rarity points used up on Jackie.

When they put up a Negro Lg category i keep thinking that it means someone who played in the NNL or NAL As well as in MLB, but just Negro LG players are acceptable also.

Would have helped me if I knew that. Wound up with a 72 Rarity score, 55 of which was Jackie [.300 BA/Negro Lg]

Ron Darling was my Washington/Oakland guy too.

I must've slept through Carlos Santana being a Royal. Juan Gonzalez too.

I had Vida Blue for Royals/A's. I never had a chance to guess for Royals/Indians because I wasted the Oakland Gold Glove on Bert Campaneris before pivoting to Rickey Henderson.

I always pick Ron Darling for A's/Nationals. I see I'm not the only one.

My first thought was to use Colon there but I needed him instead as my WAS/CLE guy

Similarly, eras-wise, I wasted mine on Bill North before pivoting to Dwayne Murphy.

The fun part about these is trying to think up guys in positions they weren't know for playing such as Mantle

at 1B (in the final year of his career) or Mays at SS (which he did for part of a 23 inning game vs the Mets)

Those two wound up adding up to less than 1%

Rarity = 9

MVP/SS -- Willie Mays 0.7%

MVP/500HR -- Frank Robinson 4%

MVP/GG -- Jonnhy Bench 2%

1B/SS -- Jose Oquendo 4%

I'm surprised that 4% chose José Oquendo as their shortstop/firstbaseman.

I went with Joe McEwing. I would imagine that to be a less rare selection (recency bias) but I don't know.

OE: Super Joe got 1%.

Good call by you and FMan on McEwing, I wouldn't have thought of him.

I was surprised too by Oquendo being as 'high' as 4% but Whitey used him there for a while

so he played a lot more 1B than did Super Joe.

I knew Mantle played SS in the minors but I couldn't remember if he did in the majors also.

Turns out he did, three times. Played all four IF positions as it turns out plus all three OF

spots so that's something to store away in the memory banks. Never pitched or caught.

The other 1B/SS Met that came to mind was Wilmer Flores.

A lot of slow-or-or-slowish-but-nonetheless-versatile Met infielders qualify — Justin Turner, Eric Campbell, Tim Teufel, John Valentin, Kelly Johnson, Juan Uribe, Kevin Mitchell ... .

And that's just sniffing around the Mets part of my brain. And yet 4% went for José Oquendo. Remarkable.

Posted

Perhaps the oddness of someone Oquendo's size (5' 10"/160) playing 1B helped it lodge in peeps' minds.

Turns out he played 'only' 23 games there, starting three including two CGs. I would have guessed more.

Used some BALL FOUR voodoo to get the 'Brewer'/Oriole (Gene Brabender) and 'Brewer'/Catcher (Jerry McNertney) categories today.
