If you are alternating, they presumably both have the same advantage against a lefty, and the same disadvantage against a righty.

Alvarez is the hotter batter. He is 6-for-17 (.353) with a home run and three RBIs over his last seven games.

If he isn't going to catch against the lefty, why not DH him?(Although I can't argue that after what Canha did)

No explanation given.

Gary speculated about needing a starter on Sunday so maybe bringing Lew Casey back on three days rest. Or maybe just Buck wanted to counter Detroit's RH-heavy lineup rather than have the Lefty going third time around.
