Well that was a disappointing night. It makes the double come-back games on Wednesday even Huge-r in retrospect.

- JdG wasn't bad but wasn't good enough. Of course, we expect near perfection from him so we're destined to be disappointed occasionally.

- I liked that Buck stuck with Alvarez in two important ABs. Neither worked but I still don't have a problem with the decision.

- we can whine about the reliever choices but I'm not sure I'd have been happy w/Buck had we burned top relievers in a game we were only on the fringes of being in.

May was fine (one AB) as was Joely. Megill was not but so it goes. The Braves, meanwhile, used McHugh, Minter, Iglesies and Jansen while we've got Diaz, Lugo,

Smith, and Ottavino ready to go Sat & Sun

- We NEED one game in this series while they need two so tonight essentially evened things out.

- Gotta hit at some point

And Jansen threw a lot of pitches. Gotta win tomorrow. Someday I'll stop letting 26 random men in blue and orange completely dictate my mood. But tonight is not that night.

"we can whine about the reliever choices but I'm not sure I'd have been happy w/Buck had we burned top relievers in a game we were only on the fringes of being in." It was only 3 to 1 when Megill came in to audition for a post-season roster spot instead of May. If Naquin had somehow singled and they lost 5 to 3 those 2 runs would have been the difference.

Also if they hold that lead, the tying run(s) are on base for Escobar, and maybe Jansen is just ever so slightly more walk-adverse and leaves one just a little bit more hittable and Escobar does in fact, hit it.

I guess a similar challenge can be leveled at the manager for going with Álvarez over Vogelbach.

Terry Collins could be similar — especially in the first half of his Mets tenure — in prioritizing tomorrow over today, even when "today" seemed maddeningly crucial.

I didn't like the Megill move at all. He's not a reliever and he never has been one at the MLB level. He's miscast in that spot, unlike (literally) every other member of the pen that isn't David Peterson.

Prior to last night Megill had 4 relief appearances in his ML career (all just recently) and allowed 0 runs in 3 of them. So I think it premature at best, and far too small a sample size (3.1 IP) in any case, to declare him as being suited for just one role to the exclusion of any other.

Beyond that we're saying that if whoever came in instead of Megill had put up a scoreless inning (hardly a given) and then if one or more Mets who didn't get hits did get one then the game could have turned out differently.

Yes it could have.
