Bob Alpacadaca Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Joe Girardi, who was fired by the #Phillies, said on MLB Network Radio he still "prays that they get better, and they get to the playoffs." Is this literally true? Does Girardi get down on his knees and then clasp his hands together and then concentrate real hard that the Phils make the playoffs? Does he have conversations with himself inside of his head where he says or thinks to himself that the Phils hopefully make the playoffs? What exactly goes on here? A little helpIs it any different than wishing a company or business that fired you to still prosper because you understand the firing was strictly business and there is no reason to hold a grudge or burn the bridge of good relationships with people still employed there?Especially if you'd like to lean on those people for references and recommendations?Girardi is a person of faith, and speaks openly about being a person of faith and why it is important to him. If he says he is praying for his now former players, some of whom I assume he has grown close to, then I don't have a reason to doubt him.https://sportsspectrum.com/sport/baseball/2017/10/19/yankees-manager-joe-girardi-says-greatest-freedom-life-found-christ/https://sportsspectrum.com/sport/baseball/2017/10/19/yankees-manager-joe-girardi-says-greatest-freedom-life-found-christ/
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 The key takeaway here is that Joe Girardi has been fired. The Phils are sort of in turnaround. And the Mets have completed most of their season against them. You never want to assume the door has closed on an opponent, but announcing that Rob Thompson will be the interim manager for the remainder of the season wouldn't be encouraging to me if I'm a Phillies' fan.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 I think the key takeaway is that some of the funniest things that happen here are lost because they're asides in these idiotic discussions. What if we went to a Mets game together me and you, and at the game, you asked me to get you a Diet Pepsi and instead I got you a hot dog with no mustard or ketchup and no bun, just the piece of hot dog meat, and then when you asked me why I didn't get you the Diet Pepsi you asked for, I replied that I wasnt paying attention to your phrasing so how am I supposed to know what you wanted? Then what?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Author Posted June 3, 2022 (edited) Phils respond to Girardi's canning by thrashing the Angels Ten - Zip ... but everyone thrashes the Angels lately (9 straight losses)Marcus Stroman has pitched well for the Cubs recently ... but got thumped by the Cards to the tune of 9 ER allowed in 4 innings. 14-5 was your final Edited June 3, 2022 by Guest

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Then what? Hey? Where'd you go, Rogers? OK. Never mind. I'll answer my own question. Then what? Then you'd tell me to pay attention to the way you phrase things, the phrasing, so you'd get the Diet Pepsi you asked for. Because you want me to pay attention to the way you phrase something. Which is the key takeaway from all of this: pay attention to the way people phrase things. Then what?I figured I'd take the cue from Bucket and stopped responding.Your scenario is not the same at all. The scenario where someone uses a non-secular phrase of prayer to describe sentiments usually reserved for “yeah, I don't harbor too much ill will and I wish them well the rest of the season” statements is more akin to you showing up with another brand of diet cola beverage, not something entirely different! How do you not see that?I dont follow this at all. Also, I didnt create a scenario for Girardi. I only asked some questions. How do you know what Girardi meant when he referred to "praying"? Why would he use that word if he wasn't gonna pray?
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 I guess you're saying that it's not necessarily an expression.to be taken literally?
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 "Thoughts and prayers" always convinces me that the speaker is thinking and praying, more or less non-stop. Just a calculatin' and a God-beseechin' fool, I always conclude.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2022 Author Posted June 4, 2022 In their last five games combined -- three vs LAA & two vs DET -' the Yanx have allowed a total of 3 runs on 20 hits. They've scored 33 over those same five.
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 I biked up to Lunchpails track meet today in the Bronx, catching the fans coming in, then out of MFY Stadium. I pretended to be a Yankee fan as I cruised thru em on the way back, asking "Who won?"I wasn't happy but I can relate to giddy fans exiting the park. It's a great feeling
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2022 Author Posted June 6, 2022 This week ended with lots of broomage, much of it in our own division:Yanx swept the Tiggers Boston swept OaklandBraves swept the RoxPhils swept the AngelsPadres swept MilwaukeeAnd while the Nats didn't technically sweep the Reds, they did take three straight after dropping the first in a four game setThe A's are the victims of back to back series sweeps. The Angels, now losers of 11 straight, were swept back-to-back-to-back (TOR x 4, Yanx x 3, Phils x3, plus a loss to Texas to start the streak)The Angels/Phils on Sunday to extend that LAA losing streak was ridiculous. Anaheim led 5-0, 6-2, and 7-6, losing those last two leads on a 2-out 8th inning Grand Slam (Harper) and then a 2-out / 9th inning / full count / 3R walk-off HR (Stott)
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 6, 2022 Posted June 6, 2022 Yeah, despite Anaheim having the two best players on the planet, the AL West is suddenly looking like a niche minor league.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2022 Author Posted June 6, 2022 The Angels were a quite respectable 10 games over .500 12 days ago and looked like at least a potential contender for division supremacy. Now they're a game below ... and sinking fast. Not coincidentally, Trout is sitting on an 0h-fer-27 at the moment (w/2 BB & 10 K). His last safety was a 5th inning double on May 27th, the 3rd game of the losing streak.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted June 6, 2022 Posted June 6, 2022 It helps you appreciate the grit that got the Mets through the last two days.A punch in the face from reality is waiting for everybody. The ones who take that punch and keep their feet, or keep going forward, are the survivors. But Anaheim and the Mets were in a similar place two weeks back and as sobering as it is to see a peer fall, it's gratifying to remain on the move following this series.Trying not to feel good in seeing Stroman and Syndergaard take the pricks. That's no way to be cool. But man.
