bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 Yesterday was "Spirit Day", a day to decry the bullying of LGBTQ+ youths. Every MLB team posted a message on Twitter supporting the day and the intended message, including the Mets. The Texas Rangers omitted the "LGTQ+" portion, making it a general statement against bullying which missed the intention of the day. Atlanta and Houston did the same but at least included a link to GLAAD. The Texas Rangers didn't even bother. The Athletic's Levi Weaver is all over the story. If you don't have access, here's a portion of his article in which the team doubled down on what it did by saying that we're "against bullying" without recognizing the purpose of the day:[bLOCKQUOTE]...the conclusion seems to be that someone in a very high-up place inside the organization has made an intentional decision that the team's official channels would not voice public support for the LGBTQ+ community, even on a topic as simple as an anti-bullying initiative. Making matters more confusing, Rangers part-owner and COO Neil Leibman is the chairman of Major League Baseball's diversity, equity and inclusion committee, according to this article in the New York Times.https://theathletic.com/2905710/2021/10/22/weaver-the-rangers-persistent-refusal-to-acknowledge-lgbtq-fans-and-community-is-unacceptable/https://theathletic.com/2905710/2021/10/22/weaver-the-rangers-persistent-refusal-to-acknowledge-lgbtq-fans-and-community-is-unacceptable/[/bLOCKQUOTE]

kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 There's something in the water down there. Weren't they going to secede years ago?
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 It should probably be said that most of the "good" messages aren't much more than performative. Like, didn't the Mets introduce a big Chick-Fila advertisement on pride night? Like, fucking come on.But to go out of your way to do less than the bare minimum is pretty goddamn terrible and sadly on-brand for the state of Texas.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 It's sort of useful that one organization willingly plays the heel, (a) showing that the other organizations stepping up isn't without risk, and ( raising the profile of the whole effort, which might otherwise come across as a little begrudged, landing in MLB's post-season when little more commitment than a tweet is required, rather than a live statement in front of a crowd on television.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 (edited) I caught the very end of a report on WCBS news. I believe it said President George W Bush, who was a part owner of the Texas Rangers for a while, didn't like the omission.Later Edited October 22, 2021 by Guest
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 George W. was the one who was Rangers co-owner and managing partner in the 1990s. George H.W. is dead at the present time..
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 no one should care what a war criminal thinks though.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 Kinda sad, when you remember that the State motto of Texas is ..... (wait for it).... "Friendship".Later
