Poor Jayce getting the Art Howe treatment.

"We don't want or need you to manage, now get out there and manage."

Cardinals have had enough of that Shildt. Mike is out as St. Loo skipper.

It appears to have surprised every baseball writer, as well. Perhaps the next manager of the Mets or Padres?

I'm curious what the philosophical differences were. But I'd have already called Shildt and/or his agent.

I'm pretty sure it was one of those what's the right way to hang the toilet paper? thingies. That's ended more than one managerial tenure.

More seriously, that guy's team had a terrific second half, starting with pretty much the moment I dreamed up the notion that the Cards would be bailing at the deadline and sending the Mets Adam Wainwright.

From this quote, I'm guessing that management told him to do something in the WC loss to the Dodgers and he didn't obey:

An intra-squad spring training game.

Toast and Marmol-ade for Cards. From the subscription-based Athletic:

The St. Louis Cardinals will announce Oliver Marmol as the team's next manager on Monday morning, sources tell The Athletic. Marmol, 35, had been bench coach for the Cardinals since 2019 and previously was first base coach for the two seasons prior.

The Cardinals fired manager Mike Shildt earlier this month after four seasons with the club. John Mozeliak, Cardinals president of baseball operations, cited “philosophical differences” for doing so. Shildt ended his tenure in St. Louis with a 252-199 record and three playoff appearances.

Marmol, 35, will be the youngest manager in MLB. He will also be the first Cardinals manager of color since Mike González in 1940.

The Cardinals, who finished the 2021 season 90-72, lost 3-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League wild card game.

If the front office tried to tell him how to manage and he told them where they could go and what they could do to themselves when they got there, then he's exactly the guy I want.

I agree, smg58, but I fear that if they want Shildt they won't be able to get him as he's already under consideration by SD and the Mets are waiting until they hire a GM/POBO.

I wouldn't worry about that. If they are able to recognize the right guy, there are hundreds of right guys out there.

I think a greater concern is the effect the front office job search might have on delaying the Mets in the player market, which is a much more finite field.
