Are we really killing Rojas here for not using Diaz for a third game in under 24 hours for what should have been a cookie save [3-run lead, bottom of the order from a team playing out the string]?

I was imagining the pasting that decision would take if Luis HAD gone to Edwin.

I'm certainly not. Without checking the numbers, Diaz has always seemed much better on a day's rest. May needed to get it done, and Familia (and McNeil) needed to bail him out when he couldn't.

And the biggest thing in my mind: it was a three run lead! Those are saved at >95% clip no matter who is given the ball.

The problem was obviously the wildness by both May & Familia; the Nats hit one ball hard that whole inning (the leadoff single).

Other than that there was an infield single (two if you want to call the one to McNeil an IF hit) plus too many pitches, walks, and WPs/PBs

The (half) inning sucked but I don't fault the decision that got them there.

Plus it ended well and no one got injured in the process.

I didn't see anybody killing him.

I questioned it because:

(1) I was ignorant, having been out in the sun all day and not realizing I was watching game two and not game one, in which Diaz had already appeared, and

(2) It was only after May exited with the bases bloated and Familia came on.

My bad, but no killing under any circumstances. And I'll even step up for Familia. Awarding a single win or loss exclusively to any pitcher is archaic, but Familia more or less got the job done, The Mets just didn't make the plays.

"Bad job by Luis"

"Why are we coddling these guys?"

My point is that using your closer to cinch a three run game is, at best, more often than not an inefficient use of resources. At worst it's playing for stats above wins.

Now throw in that Diaz was used twice in the previous 20 hours and I'd argue that using him in a low leverage situation against a (currently) bad team would be closer to blatant misuse.

the move to get on Rojas for is letting Williams burn an out and pitch a 5th inning of 7 when he's garbage and like your 15th SP. I know it was the bottom of the order, but quit while you're ahead. The bullpens been good enough to do 3 innings, plus real hitter.

I'm again disappointed to read you calling people garbage.

Yeah, I'm going to support that. Add in that there was a dangerously high heat index and it's not far fetched to say a second appearance wouldn't necessarily have been the best thing for everybody.

I'll also note that McNuggett may have failed to keep the ball in the infield on the game-tying hit, but he had spent two games in the sun out there today playing on a weak leg.

We missed all of the excitement of the last inning.

After being at the ballpark for the better part of 5+ hours, over both games, we saw the Villar HR in the 8th, and the sky turned a really brilliant purple color right around that same time frame. We hit the road and listened to the last inning on XM, so, we didn't witness either the Familia/McNeil melt or the Alonso walk off. Which is kind of a bummer. It's also OK, I mean, as it is, we didn't get back to Syracuse until 11:15 PM, so we'd have been likely even later still had we stuck around for the end. The crowd had thinned out bigly at that point.

We had a great day nonetheless. Still got 13 innings of in person baseball in for our money's worth.

We'll be back in 2022. Covid aside my son and I have gone to at least one mid week afternoon matinee every summer since Citi Field opened.
