smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 The Padres just gave Fernando Tatis Jr. a 14-year, $340M extension that will keep him in San Diego until he's 35. The deal is completely unprecedented for somebody with as little experience as Tatis, but I don't think there is any doubt that it's a win for San Diego IF he stays healthy. I'm sure Jean Soto and Ronald Acuna are following this story closely. And I know the Mets have taken a lot of public flack for trading Jared Kelenic, but I really hope the White Sox enjoyed their 2 1/2 seasons of 0 total WAR they got from James Shields.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I remember when there were rumors that the Mets might trade Syndergaard for Tatis.
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2021 Author Posted February 18, 2021 And we were all against it at the time. So much of successful GMing comes down to knowing which prospects (both yours and around the league) are overvalued and which are undervalued.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 I don't remember this rumor or being for it or against it.Good for the Padres. Good for Tatis. I hope it's a happy marriage.I wonder how early Pete Alonso's agent got up this morning.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 That same principle should lead Patrick Mahomes to pull his punches against the Jets.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 Judging by the Jets recent run of "success", I'd say they appear to have a non-aggression pact with most teams ... just not necessarily a mutual one.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 His fangraphs WAR:dollars was $29M in 2019 and $23.1M in the abbreviated 2020. It's a lot of risk, but I feel like both parties are gonna be pretty happy with this deal.
metsmarathon Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 wowzers.that shields trade. yikes. i mean, they were still in the playoff race at that point, but with a ~30% chance at making the playoffs. they were already in the middle of a fade having dropped out of first place a month earlier, i think. but then started fading and kept fading HARD after the trade. probably a deal they'd like to have back. in our own hindsight, yeah, maybe trading noah for tatis woulda been ok to do. my kid would've been sad, though. and we probably wouldn't have just gotten lindor, so there's that. i'm just glad we didn't send syndy to the yanks. back to tatis. yah, this is an incredibly early extension for a very young player with so little track record and for an really long time. but holy cow does this look like a thing that'll work out well for both parties. i hope to hell it's a ridiculous steal for the padres, because that'll mean that they've got a massive supernova of a star on their hands. good for them. and for tatis, too!
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 Ay caramba. They'll be paying him until 2035, which is when the Mets finally stop paying Bobby Bonilla. There's no way this works out well for the Padres in the long run. 14 years is ridiculous. At some point they'll be a rebuilding team and this will look even more ridiculous.

They can maybe get 10 years (!!!) of elite production at $24M AAV. I think that could make the "down years" easier to stomach.
