Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 Ten seconds after I updated our roster thread with all the minor-league Mets that were becoming minor league free agents, the Mets dropped an announcement that a bunch of them had been re-signed and invited to the Met theoretical 2020 Spring Training camp. It seems a little early for those sorts of invites, but hey, good news. Some new arrivals are among the announced signings too, including former Brave speedburner, the virilely named Mallex Smith. Smith led the AL in steals with Seattle in 2019, but appeared only briefly and mostly ineffectively in 2020, after spending the COVID break living in a tent in his parents back yard.https://external-preview.redd.it/sEgynOFrr4YTVA_DSShFU8g_ODNMOs6vfXxXyUzLx00.gif?format=png8&s=2d2998d8f6863c62358d5a676881635ba8c3879d>
vtmet7 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2020 Posted November 4, 2020 he could be an interesting reclaim project...weird thing about his splits in 2019, he's a lefty hitter, but it was against RHP that he struggled and hit fine against LHP...with his speed, if he could give you solid CF defense with a .330 OBP and around a .700 OPS, that could be acceptable
smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 He was very good with the Rays in 2018, but struggled for Seattle in 2019 and fell off a cliff last year. Maybe it was coaching, maybe pitchers caught up to him, maybe he got lucky once. He could have value for a dumpster dive, or he could be Billy Hamilton minus the big bat. Zero risk, but zero expectations. I'm fine with him if he's not this year's Marisnick and then we decide we're done in the outfield.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I'd love to hear the story behind how he managed to fall off a cliff, but I'm glad he wasn't badly hurt.Brodie is still making moves, but he has to feel that there's a big dark cloud over his head. I read somewhere that he's been communicating with Sandy through an intermediary.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted November 5, 2020 Author Posted November 5, 2020 Well, the Mets traded two guys for Marizzy. But I like the strategy of always having a ballhawk in reserve for when things go south or you just want late-inning defense. Among Marisnick, Hamilton, and Juan Lagares, there was usually someone who could go get it in the outfield last year.It would be nice to get Springer and have that guy be a starter, but things don't work out or they break down, this is a good type to have around.

seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 You know, Mets, you had a chance to go get a centerfielder who can't hit AND add a third Seawolf to the roster. But whatever.
