Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Responded to Bruce Berenyi in a facebook thread. Mets Rewind group.Clicked over to his page, and it's all Trump. I was an innocent in 84 and really admired the guy.Other C-level celebrities behind Trump I Facebook browsed: Romantics singer Wally Palomar, which is a shame because he's in Michigan
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 I had faith in a MoFo-era Internet discovery that suggested Bruce had been starring in a competitive Miami-area gay softball league.I never found evidence of a wife, and I had that filed under "true things you find on the Internet." When there was a 1986 Mets Meetup at Darryl's place, Bruce made a rare showing and was interviewed, quietly admitting that he usually avoids such outings, but it was nice to catch up with old friends. I guess I'm guilty of confirmation bias, because I interpreted that as "gay, urbane, and too sophisticated for a whole lot of hanging with conservative old ballplayers."Boy, did I misread that. Is Ed Lynch a Trumpeter as well?
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2020 Author Posted October 13, 2020 I sorta knew that rumor too. I thought it came from Pearlman's 86 Mets book but I think I looked it up again and didn't find that. There's a few pics of him sitting pretty close to another guy on a couch on his fb. NTTAWWT. The hat though. That's offensive to me
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Hey, look! Berenyi's number was originally supposed to go to his manager, hired this day in 1983!https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/johnson-31.jpg>
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 I think the gay softball league thing came from a UMDB fan memory.

Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2020 Author Posted October 14, 2020 Yeah that Johnson photo posted on fb is what he & I responded to: I let Bruce know that his predecessor in the 31 jersey wasn't Johnson but a different Mets' manager, George Bamberger.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 Todd Pratt is really Trumpy. I think everyone would expect that.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Mariano Rivera and Johnny Damon are each Yankees for Trump.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Is Bruce the only major leaguer with a last name ending with "yi"?No other comes to mind.Later
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Well, I searched the UMDB, which has every Mets player, opponent, and minor leaguer since 1962, and Bruce is the only YI guy. Of course, that doesn't account for the decades before 1962. I think Rabbit Maranville's last name may have ended in YI but it was before my time, so I can't be sure.https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6e/Rabbit_Maranville_1914.jpg>
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 According to baseballreference.com, Maranville's name was Walter James Vincent Maranville.Later
