I had faith in a MoFo-era Internet discovery that suggested Bruce had been starring in a competitive Miami-area gay softball league.



I never found evidence of a wife, and I had that filed under "true things you find on the Internet." When there was a 1986 Mets Meetup at Darryl's place, Bruce made a rare showing and was interviewed, quietly admitting that he usually avoids such outings, but it was nice to catch up with old friends. I guess I'm guilty of confirmation bias, because I interpreted that as "gay, urbane, and too sophisticated for a whole lot of hanging with conservative old ballplayers."



Boy, did I misread that. Is Ed Lynch a Trumpeter as well?

I sorta knew that rumor too. I thought it came from Pearlman's 86 Mets book but I think I looked it up again and didn't find that. There's a few pics of him sitting pretty close to another guy on a couch on his fb. NTTAWWT. The hat though. That's offensive to me

Yeah that Johnson photo posted on fb is what he & I responded to: I let Bruce know that his predecessor in the 31 jersey wasn't Johnson but a different Mets' manager, George Bamberger.

Well, I searched the UMDB, which has every Mets player, opponent, and minor leaguer since 1962, and Bruce is the only YI guy. Of course, that doesn't account for the decades before 1962. I think Rabbit Maranville's last name may have ended in YI but it was before my time, so I can't be sure.
