Lest it be lost in tonight's multiple story lines, before the game, Dominic Smith became the first Mets player to kneel during the national anthem.

A stunning moment came in his post-game comments. What he said, and — good God — what he didn't say.

Been noted, but for the sake of getting it out here: he was the only Met to do so.

Conforto: "I told [Dom] I wish I had been out there with him... we support him 100% no matter what he chooses to do."

Also Conforto: "I probably won't. It's just my personal decision to stand for the national anthem. That's what I've always done. But I will be there with him. He knows that I support him."

So... like... in spirit? "No matter what he chooses to do," like you would an idiot child that you love, Mike?

I understand the ambiguousness to a degree and at some level I suppose these jocks really aren't prepared to know how to talk about issues like this or act on them. Many millions aren't. This is where player agents ought to be advising guys.
