Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Kobe, at the time of the slur, was fined by, I believe the league rather than the team, and not suspended by either.

It's that the "slip-up"-- along with each subsequent apology attempt-- reveals that he's kind of a troglodyte. And if your job is to build a bridge to the public on a nightly basis, and serve as a sort of audio ambassador for the ballclub... how helpful is it to the club that the public knows this guy feels this way about them/their family and friends? Never mind whether forgiveness is deserved... in a case like this, in a job like his, how is forgiveness plausible?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 That's perfectly valid. I mean to suggest that the inital infraction itself is worthy of a suspension. Worse has been said here — sometimes maliciously, sometimes ironically. I admit that I haven't closely followed his attempts to eat his words, and if he's chronically fumbling them, I certainly amn't going to defend him.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 The thing is, NO apology is ever considered good enough by the general public. No one has yet found the magic words to show contrition without also seeming to make excuses, or without seeming to be mostly sorry about being caught, or any number of other things. You can either say too little, or too much. If you get into a situation where you have to apologize, you're doomed. That seems to be where we are these days.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Even more damning than the content of his words was the tone of them. He did not use that word in a joking way or with any degree of levity. It sounded like it came from a position of hate, or disgust. He's not coming back from that.
