Edgy MD Site Manager Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 Derek Jeter should be forced to play for the Marlins.Sheesh, could you imagine how quickly the plug would be pulled if all owners and execs were expected to dress for the games with the players?
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 Let's enjoy each game that gets played as much as we can.

Jeter should be out there with the team boosting morale, inspiring greatness, handing out gift baskets, and social-distancing from ground-balls in the hole as he did during his playing career.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Author Posted July 31, 2020 Two Cardinals have tested positive. Their game at Milwaukee is postponed. Also another positive test from the Marlins.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 How long before we run out of Marlins? It's going to be REALLY hard to complete this season.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Author Posted July 31, 2020 Didn't see this precise scenario in the predictions thread. Also, Cards-Brewers still scheduled for Saturday, then a newfangled doubleheader on Sunday.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 I mean, this is sorta fun. Just, like, with a higher superdark-logistics-puzzle-fun quotient than I expected.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 I know what you mean. The fun is definitely lessened by the fact that it's propelled by a deadly disease, which is a bummer. But the utter craziness of the season is fascinating. We'll (hopefully) never see anything like this again. If they manage to find a way to keep playing through October, there are any number of nutty surprises ahead.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Honesty, I watched the first and second Mets games, but tuned out after that. I can't justify spending time and energy on a season that seems due to fail. It's bordering on embarrassing that they continue to think this has a chance of getting to October.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 I agree that the season seems doomed, but I'm taking an opposite approach. Most Mets seasons don't end with a trip to the playoffs anyway, so I might as well enjoy each game on its own merits. And I have plenty of time to waste! My wife is gone, my girlfriend is (for the duration) socially distant as is everyone else except for my kids, who although still living with me are young adults and don't put many demands on my time at all. I'll cherish each game as if it was the last, because each one very well might be.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark on Friday that if the sport doesn't do a better job of managing the coronavirus, it could shut down for the season, sources familiar with the conversation told ESPN.According to the article, the shutdown may come as soon as Monday. State and local governments have pressured baseball about players skirting the mandates outlined in the league's 113-page operations manual, sources told ESPN. Broadcasts that have shown players high-fiving, spitting and not wearing masks have left government officials wondering how seriously players are taking the protocols, sources said.Further, there is concern about off-the-field choices, with one high-ranking official saying: "There are some bad decisions being made."https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29572885/sources-mlb-commissioner-warns-shutdown-players-do-better-job-managing-coronavirushttps://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/29572885/sources-mlb-commissioner-warns-shutdown-players-do-better-job-managing-coronavirus

Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 I tried not to get too invested because I didn't even think they'd start. The Mets look fairly bad but I still find myself watching. I'll be pissed if MLB screws this up but I think it's inevitable at this point.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Even if it's just a ten-game season, I'll be glad to have had it.

Win the day, precious and few as our days may be.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Author Posted August 1, 2020 (edited) Tonight's Cardinal game (4 more positive tests; 1 player, 3 staff) has been posted. Doubleheader vs Brewers still scheduled. Edited August 1, 2020 by Guest
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 All of this is just dumb.If we want to be entertained, we should go to a pop-up drive in. Or read. Or go the ball-and-a-cup route.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Author Posted August 1, 2020 And the makeup STL-MIL doubleheader tomorrow ain't happening either.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 And on and on we go.Joel Sherman@Joelsherman1·Can confirm that tomorrow's #STLCards #Brewers doubleheader also has been postponed.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Another team comes down with a cluster and that might be the tipping point. Especially if it's an AL team. The schedule gets too hard to put back together.
kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 They'll pull the plug Monday morning.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Yeah, MLB thinks of the Cards as, like, real playershttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rp-iKuQFwlg/XFHBNHhiYuI/AAAAAAABWlA/O0VzByQPkTQtnMiHxxjE50yWwxo3DEZNgCLcBGAs/s1600/tom%2Bplug.gif>
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Manfred is about the interweb being as optimistic as possibleBaseball has provided me a well needed distraction and fun
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Manfred has also warned the union, via Tony Clark, that the players need to follow protocol including when the game is NOT going on.Or, as Angie Dundee once said to Sugar Ray Leonard when he thought his fighter was taking things for granted, 'You're blowin' it kid'
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 I'm not at all surprised that many players are not taking this seriously. They're a cross-section of America, after all, and they're young and think they're invulnerable.During one of the ESPN telecasts opening weekend, they talked to someone (forget who, but he was a Mets fan with a Strawberry jersey hanging on his wall) who was familiar with Korean baseball and he discussed the peer pressure that players feel to not screw this up. In South Korea even one positive test result would lead to the entire league being suspended for two weeks.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 I think Korea, and really much of east Asia in general, tend to be less individualistic societies. The whole idea of not wanting to screw up because it might embarrass your family/friends/team/company/hometown leads to less boat-rocking and a lot more line-toeing.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Author Posted August 1, 2020 From Yahoo!New Phillies-Yankees scheduleThe Phillies and the New York Yankees, who saw their four-game home-and-home series from July 27-30 postponed, will make up those games from Aug. 3-6. There will be two games in the Bronx on Aug. 3 and 4, followed by two games in Philadelphia on Aug. 5 and 6.The game the Yankees were scheduled to play against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 6, which is being displaced by their final game against the Phillies, will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Aug. 8. Their originally scheduled Aug. 5 game against the Baltimore Orioles will be made up at a date to be determined.New Marlins-Orioles scheduleThe Marlins and Orioles were supposed to play a four-game home-and-home schedule from July 27-30, but it's been both rescheduled and reimagined. All four games will be played in Baltimore from Aug. 4-6, with the Marlins serving as the home team for two games. One day will feature a doubleheader. The games between the Marlins and Phillies, which were supposed to be played from Aug. 4-6, will be made up on dates to be determined.
nymr83 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Until covid screws all that up.Best you can do at this point is cancel whiever is infected amd if two teams are cancelled let their opponents play instead, the heck with balancing schedule
