Given their relative ages they could all opt out as 'high risk', except Jeter. Jeter should be out there with the team boosting morale, inspiring greatness, handing out gift baskets, and social-distancing from ground-balls in the hole as he did during his playing career.

I know what you mean. The fun is definitely lessened by the fact that it's propelled by a deadly disease, which is a bummer. But the utter craziness of the season is fascinating. We'll (hopefully) never see anything like this again.



If they manage to find a way to keep playing through October, there are any number of nutty surprises ahead.

Honesty, I watched the first and second Mets games, but tuned out after that. I can't justify spending time and energy on a season that seems due to fail. It's bordering on embarrassing that they continue to think this has a chance of getting to October.

I agree that the season seems doomed, but I'm taking an opposite approach. Most Mets seasons don't end with a trip to the playoffs anyway, so I might as well enjoy each game on its own merits. And I have plenty of time to waste! My wife is gone, my girlfriend is (for the duration) socially distant as is everyone else except for my kids, who although still living with me are young adults and don't put many demands on my time at all. I'll cherish each game as if it was the last, because each one very well might be.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark on Friday that if the sport doesn't do a better job of managing the coronavirus, it could shut down for the season, sources familiar with the conversation told ESPN.

According to the article, the shutdown may come as soon as Monday.

State and local governments have pressured baseball about players skirting the mandates outlined in the league's 113-page operations manual, sources told ESPN. Broadcasts that have shown players high-fiving, spitting and not wearing masks have left government officials wondering how seriously players are taking the protocols, sources said. Further, there is concern about off-the-field choices, with one high-ranking official saying: "There are some bad decisions being made."

I tried not to get too invested because I didn't even think they'd start. The Mets look fairly bad but I still find myself watching. I'll be pissed if MLB screws this up but I think it's inevitable at this point.

Manfred has also warned the union, via Tony Clark, that the players need to follow protocol including when the game is NOT going on.

I'm not at all surprised that many players are not taking this seriously. They're a cross-section of America, after all, and they're young and think they're invulnerable.



During one of the ESPN telecasts opening weekend, they talked to someone (forget who, but he was a Mets fan with a Strawberry jersey hanging on his wall) who was familiar with Korean baseball and he discussed the peer pressure that players feel to not screw this up. In South Korea even one positive test result would lead to the entire league being suspended for two weeks.

I think Korea, and really much of east Asia in general, tend to be less individualistic societies.

The whole idea of not wanting to screw up because it might embarrass your family/friends/team/company/hometown leads to less boat-rocking and a lot more line-toeing.

New Phillies-Yankees schedule The Phillies and the New York Yankees, who saw their four-game home-and-home series from July 27-30 postponed, will make up those games from Aug. 3-6. There will be two games in the Bronx on Aug. 3 and 4, followed by two games in Philadelphia on Aug. 5 and 6. The game the Yankees were scheduled to play against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 6, which is being displaced by their final game against the Phillies, will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Aug. 8. Their originally scheduled Aug. 5 game against the Baltimore Orioles will be made up at a date to be determined. New Marlins-Orioles schedule The Marlins and Orioles were supposed to play a four-game home-and-home schedule from July 27-30, but it's been both rescheduled and reimagined. All four games will be played in Baltimore from Aug. 4-6, with the Marlins serving as the home team for two games. One day will feature a doubleheader. The games between the Marlins and Phillies, which were supposed to be played from Aug. 4-6, will be made up on dates to be determined.
