Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 I think about Art from time to time. He wasn't the right manager for the Mets by any stretch but what got me was how defeated he was when he finished here. He may not have been Billy Squier but managing the 03-04 Mets was his "Rock Me Tonite" video. I don't think he'd even worked in OBB since the Mets fired him in the New York Post then let him hang around for a few weeksHis Moneyball film portrayal didn't do his real-life any favors either. The book was fairer to him.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2020 Author Posted May 15, 2020 Art coached for Ron Washington (“Wash”) in Texas after the Mets disaster ended. He was with the Rangers when they made their lone trip to Shea in 2008, ironically the weekend when the Mets held off on firing Willie Randolph, only to off him on the West Coast in the East Coast wee hours directly thereafter.

Jerry Manuel, Omar Minaya, and Sandy Alderson were all kind of fired before they were fired, also.

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Howe was put in a situation where success was impossible. Compare that to Randolph, who was put in a situation where success was almost unavoidable, but he still managed to avoid it in 07 and 08. I've always felt bad for Howe, and I'm sorry that he's sick now.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 No Mets manager inherited a better team in the immediate and short term, than Willie Randolph. It was like giving a Ferrari to some kid who should've been driving a bicycle with training wheels.
