In anticipation of the strike in 1981 (he didn't even wait for it to actually happen) which, for all we knew, could have knocked out the entire season, Newsday columnist Joe Gergen decided to name his choice

for 1981 MVP, that would be that year's Mini Valuable Player, at some point in late-May/early June. He also chose the Manager of the Months award as well as the Cy O'Nara winner.



Ranking the best NYM for July 2020 has that same sort of feel.
