Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2020 Author Posted January 14, 2020 Wow, four years for Donaldson! At a just-turned 34 he's not that old, but at this time last year the one-year deal he got from the Braves was considered risky on account of age and past injuries.

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Donaldson bet on himself last offseason and won. The Braves got a division title and a draft pick for their one-year investment, but now they have to choose between a very expensive trade and taking a huge downgrade at the position.
Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 Johan Camargo put up an .806 OPS in 2018 before struggling in a marginalized role last year. He won't be Donaldson, but the Braves might have a good in-house option there. It's so much fun when your team doesn't actually get better and your only hope for the winter is that the other teams get worse.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 The Giants have signed Drew Smyly.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 16, 2020 Author Posted January 16, 2020 On those chilly Bay area nights, he can be the pitcher who came in from the cold.

smg58 Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 An interesting but overlooked trade: the Rays acquired 1B/OF Jose Martinez and OF Randy Arozarena for St. Louis in exchange for pitching prospect Matthew Liberatore (with a few smaller pieces exchanged as well). The Cardinals sacrifice significant major-league outfield depth for a prospect, which is curious for a contender -- but it makes more sense if they work a deal out for Arenado. The Rays get two solid right-handed bats. Arozarena could have been a sneaky option in centerfield, with a decent power/speed combination and a pretty high ceiling.
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 Martinez will be a MUCH better fit in the AL. Good God, that's a big dude.

Side effects include bleeding, difficulty breathing, death, and the condition known as "hot dog fingers."
LWFS Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Some critics argue that The Liberatore should be the national anthem, but those people often ignore the song's roots as a Georgian opiate-smoking song and its problematic associations with the induced-labor movement of the early 20th century. Besides, it's in Pig Italian.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Pedro Strop to the Reds. 1.85M.This is the type of flyer that I would have liked to see from the Mets. Not a great year with the Cubs last year, but still has good stuff, WHIP was decent, and only 34 years old. For that type of money. You just wonder if we're even trying.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 This bullpen will rise or fall depending on what Diaz and Familia do. If they're good, they won't need the Strops of the world. If they're bad, Pedro Strop wouldn't have made a difference. I get the feeling Brodie is looking at it that way, too.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2020 Author Posted January 30, 2020 Yeah, it's tough to equate passing on Pedro Strop with 'not trying'. And you figure if there were demand for Strop he wouldn't have wound up on a one-year deal in Cincy.Familia, Diaz, Lugo, Wilson, Bettances, Gsellman, plus maybe Wacha and whatever cast of characters will fill things out.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2020 Author Posted January 30, 2020 In the meantime, both the Dodgers & Padres are in deep talks w/Boston over Mookie BettsNot sure which way things are going to go but it's starting to sound like something is going to happen soon. And speaking of (not) soon, how crazy is it that the Sawx still haven't named a manager? It's been 2-1/2 weeks since Cora "resigned" and not even that long until P's & C's report.I think some here were calling it a sign of NYM front office disfunction when a replacement for Beltran hadn't been named in like the first 48 hours.
