Round 3: Matthew Allen, RHP Seminole HS Florida. "front line starter potential" but needs to be convin$ed to skip college.

Round 4: Jake Magnum, CF, Mississippi State (is that where the CPF's own Farmer Ted works now?)

--Mets previously drafted Magnum last year but he returned for his senior year. Switch hitter with speed no power or walks

Big move by the Mets in Round 3, taking a HS pitcher projected as a 1st rounder but was thought to be college-bound. Hopefully Brodie knows something. These comments are from The Athletic, the 1st from Jim Bowden who has Allan as the 4th best pitcher in the draft, the 2d from the Nationals reporter who projected him as a 1st rounder in their mock.

[bLOCKQUOTE]Matthew Allan, RHP, Seminole HS (Sanford, Fla.)

Age: 18 Height: 6-3 Weight: 210 Bats: R Throws: R

FB: 60 CB: 60 CH: 45 CTL: 55 CMND: 50

Allan has one of the best arms of all the high school pitchers in this draft, with a clean delivery and solid arm action. His solid frame gives him a good downward plane on his pitches. His arsenal includes a mid-90s fastball and a knee-buckling 12-6 curve. He'll flash an occasional changeup, but right now it is too hard and needs work. He has as high a ceiling as any pitcher in this draft, and he has committed to the University of Florida if he doesn't sign.

... I still see Washington going with a pitcher here. Allan is rated by many scouting services as the top high school pitcher in this draft. He has a classic starter's frame at 6-3, 210 and a fastball that already reaches the mid-90s. He's also an excellent athlete. [/bLOCKQUOTE]

Yes, you wanna think they had deals worked out with these kids or at least understood what they'd cost going in, and now can stop trying in the draft by getting only senior relief pitchers

Mets take another Texas high school kid, RHP Josh Wolf with their 2nd pick/53 overall.

Next year somebody will link the Mets to a player in the 2020 draft by saying: 'The Mets are known to favor prep players from Texas' -- as often these projections and 'mocks' are based on

the idea that how the team trended in the previous draft is the equivalent of a set-in-stone philosophy.

Sixth Round's best name: Stanford catcher Maverick Handley, taken by Baltimore.

Marketing Opportunity Missed by Mets: White Sox: Fifth-Rounder Dan Metzdorf.

Yanx take the same route as Mets w/3rd pick Matthew Allen by hoping/ignoring plans for college ball by drafting Jack Leiter.

He's destined for Vanderbilt acc to family but Yanx take him anyway in the 20th round

Can either or both be lured by 1st round money? Yanx are in the better position on this one as only the bonus dollars given to top 10 round choices count against the total pool.

If the Mets go 'over slot' to get Allen (and they'll have to) then that money has to come out of somewhere/someone else -- hence those college seniors drafted in rounds 4 thru

10 with less bargaining power -- and it can't just be by opting not to sign one or two guys as bonuses set aside for players not signed is simply lost.

They drafted Leiter's HS teammate with their first pick, maybe they think having his buddy in the system will help Jack's signability.

Couple more interesting guys they drafted today. A 6-foot-9 pitcher out of Oklahoma high school, Jace Beck; and a 6-foot-7 pitcher from Stetson, Mitchell Senger, whose numbers really suck--these are the intriguing ones!

They also dipped into the undrafted college wannabe ranks taking 34th ranked high school lefty Hunter Barco with the 718th pick.

Then there's the interestingly named Antoine Duplantis, an outfielder from LSU who has a sense of humor (his teammate was a MFY pick):

Antoine who goes by Twanie, has a brother named Armond, who goes as Mondo, who is also a top NCAA pole vaulter.

So-called 'Notable' picks (acc to MLB.com) from some of the later rounds:

21st round = Branden Fryman, a SS from Samford (note the lack of a 't')

Notable in that he's the son of 13 yr vet Travis

24th: Hunter Barco, LHP, The Bolles School in FLA

His draft stock took a hit due to a shoulder separation and he was shut down in advance of the draft.

"When he's at his best, however, the 6' 4" lefty Gators recruit can run his heater up to 94 mph and execute both a slider and a changeup while working from a deceptive arm slot."

25th: Joseph Charles, RHP, TNXL Academy (FLA)

'A UNC commit Charles (ranked No. 181) is up to 96-97 mph consistently with his fastball, and there could be more in the tank with some tweaks to his somewhat violent delivery.

His power stuff, delivery and lack of command lead some to peg the right-hander as a future reliever.'

27th: Dalton Fowler, LHP, Northwest Mississippi CC

'Fowler (ranked No. 150) backed out of a commitment to Mississippi, and he will return to Northwest Mississippi CC for his sophomore season if he doesn't turn pro.

While his velocity tends to fluctuate, the southpaw is still growing into his lanky 6-foot-5 frame and could sit in the mid-90s with a solid three-pitch mix once he's fully developed.'

I think that we're going to like Jake Magnum. The entire article and the videos are worthwhile:

I'm going to say something nice about Brodie Van Ego: Great job getting 1st round talent in the 3d round. He gamed the system and made it work. Nicely done!!!

Yes it did look like a good draft for them but you never know with high school pitchers.

This 4th round Jesus-loving, singles-hitter out of Mississippi going cheap helped to make it happen so I salute you, Jake Mangum.

It looks like they went well under slot for all of picks 4 through 10. I don't know how a team swings that, but they all signed.

Looks like the highest pick not yet signed is from Round 11 — Louisiana State outfielder Antoine Duplantis, who either found his power stroke his senior season, or the SEC is using Rob Manfred's balls.

They wound up with three of the pre-draft top 40 players -- the 17th, 36th, and 13th rated players with the 12th, 53rd, and 89th picks (at least according to some ratings lists).

Last time they had a draft that good it produced Ike Davis (18th), Reese Havens (22) and Bradley Holt (33) so it'll be tough to match the [CROSSOUT]great caree ...[/CROSSOUT]

Uh, nevermind.

Man, Brad Holt. We should make up a team of guys who killed it in Brooklyn and were never heard from again. The Blaedergroen Bunch.

Actually, the Blade peaked in the South Atlantic League. Make it the Concepción Cabal.
