His chance at the National League rookie record is looking really good. I think my favorite part of these updates is seeing how Pete is progressing in that last category, where he's now tied for 608. Each update brings a big leap forward.

By the way, I remember when Wayne Garrett's 55 homers had him in the top ten. Now the requirement for the top ten is more than double that amount. Michael Conforto is likely to eventually knock Edgardo Alfonzo out of the tenth slot.

I've been hoping for that as well, I just feel like if I wish too hard it won't come true.

I probably knew this but forgot. The Mets single-season RBI record, like the home run record, is a tie. The record is 124, set by Mike Piazza in 1999 and tied by David Wright in 2008. Pete Alonso currently projects to 121.8, which puts him in the hunt. The only other Met to reach 120 RBI in a season was Robin Ventura, with exactly that number in 1999.

Just like Wright was likely to knock Darryl out of the top spot.

I figured there was no way that Pete would be putting a dent in the rookie RBI record. Before our era, a slugger of his capacity didn't screw around batting second, but was always put in the best situation to pick up RBI in the 3-4-5 positions.

Did you know there was a baseball outfit called the 1914 Buffeds? I didn't! Didn't know about the 1911 Rustlers either!

CAREER STRIKEOUTS BY A METS PITCHER

1. Tom Seaver 2541

2. Dwight Gooden 1875

3. Jerry Koosman 1799

4. Sid Fernandez 1449

5. Jacob deGrom 1194

6. David Cone 1172

7. Ron Darling 1148

8. Al Leiter 1106

9. Jon Matlack 1023

10. Jon Niese 838

Jacob deGrom started the year with 1,000 strikeouts, which had him in 9th place. This year he's moved up four notches, and that's as far as he'll get for now. He passed Jon Matlack, Al Leiter, Ron Darling, and David Cone. In 2020 he has a shot at passing Sid Fernandez. Then he starts getting into really elite territory.

I think it's pretty rare air as it is.

Here's Pete after his two RBI last night. He's now out-pacing Buck Freeman, and if you're like me, that sort of news makes you go, "Who?"

But if he picks up the pace just a leetle more, he has a crack at out rookie-RBI-ing Joe F. DiMaggio. And even more possibly, seize the Mets all-time RBI record.

Hey, here's some more fun fackts:

  • Remember when Cal Ripken was the greatestest rookie anyone had seen? Pete Alonso just tied his rookie RBI number.

  • Delmon Young also had 93 RBI as a rookie, but somehow still had a negative fWAR.

It's going to be a while before Mark McGwire and Aaron Judge are within reach for the all-time rookie home run record, but the next step is to catch Hundley and Beltran for the team's all-time single season home run record.

We're also hoping to see the man crack the top-ten RBI seasons for a Met, but that's still 22 ribbies off. I can remember when for what seemed like the longest time, Rusty Staub held the team record with 105.

I think.

I'd much rather be discussing a Mets victory, but still, we're in the territory of the remarkable.

We have a new Mets home run chamion — or co-champion, or tri-champion — and it is not yet September.

As Alonso has already become champion of columns 1, 2, and 5, it's columns 3 and 6 we are keeping our eyes on now.

I'd rather do this after a win, but lately, Alfonso's homers have been solo shots coming in losses, and his better games are when he gets a few hits gap-to-gap, or key walks, and contributes to bigger rallies.

But hey, tying Davy Johnson!

I was so looking forward to updating where Pete Alonso's historic season was heading after a win. It's getting to be that the only thing that's a worse omen for the Mets than a deGrom start is an Alonso homer.
