I think the Sportsman of the Year cover can go all the way! A Met being named the athlete of the year -- of all sports, not just baseball! Great portrait, nice home plate design. Uplifting story! It's a work of art!

The stirring Straw is a great cover, and would win against most others. The Dead End Kids is heartbreaking, and the silly cap pose doesn't help.

Perhaps it's coming up in a later round, but that Dead End Kids photo appeared to have been culled from a shoot for New York magazine in 1988 when Doc and Darryl appeared on the cover in that pose in advance of the NLCS.

I think it's fair to ask WTF is Alexa?

Tom is the Sportsman of any epoch, but I'm fondest of that premature Darryl treatment.

I went with Straw. Nice close up.

I mean , it's awesome Seaver won Sportsman of the Year, but that's not a very attractive cover. Poorly shaped home plate; dark green; Seaver's hat looks like it just came out from being tumble-dried.

The Seaver cover is terribly boring, especially for a photography forward title like SI. Young Strawberry and another nickname that didn't stick, wins this round easily

I was going to guess 1985, based on the wrap around Straw's hand stretching up to his thumb.
