batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 Sneak preview - the 2019 base set -- understated and readable cards, a little more serious looking than the cards of the 60s and 70s, but not nearly as garish and cluttered as what Topps is capable of based on the last 10 or 20 years of design --https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/7TYAAOSwIApcR7O4/s-l1600.jpg>https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/tMMAAOSwGplcR7Z0/s-l1600.jpg>https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/VqMAAOSwtvZcR6X-/s-l1600.jpg>https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/vpgAAOSwcdBcR6Tw/s-l1600.jpg>And 2019 Topps Heritagehttps://i.pinimg.com/736x/03/e5/05/03e505bfed61af550a35faa722e2da3c.jpg>https://cconnect.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/2019-Topps-Heritage-Baseball-Base-Mookie-Betts.jpg>
Guest 41Forever Guests Posted January 24, 2019 Posted January 24, 2019 I just completed my 1970 set today. Nolan Ryan, No. 712, was he last one. The Heritage cards look nice.

The Heritage cards look nice.Nice! The Heritage Tebow isn't real - he wouldn't be in the set, plus the font is wrong.Yeah, I noticed the "off" Tebow font. "Mets" looks a little off, also. And the border on the Tebow card is much wider than on the actual '70 cards. Same for the Betts border.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 I'm not a card-ologist (?), I'm just asking the experts, but it seems as if the 2019 Topps design sacrifices space for an unnecessary border (I'm not going to say "wall") on the right and at the bottom. In other words, couldn't they have made the picture larger?
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Topps likes to put some sort of border feature on the flagship set, because it allows them to make colored parallel cards and it makes the chrome set this summer a little brighter too. (At least that's my impression.)
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Thank you, seawolf17. I guess that in "our day", that would have been the color to match when "flipping".
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 I'm all for borders over bleeds.Basic information (player, team, position) is appropriate on the front, and reading it against the background of the photo is always a headache. Asking the card publishers to consistently provide contrast betwen the text and the photo for hundreds of cards with 100 different levels of light and brightness, at that size, is asking too much.So yeah, givum me a border (which also makes for a great design signature for the set), or give me a stylized text box.
A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 Looks like the background is blurred in all those new Topps cards. Wonder if they instagram filtered the entire set is like that?
Johnny Lunchbucket Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 I'm guessing the Conforto card really isn't focused on his feet but the photo of the Conforto card is.all these nice cards made "flipping" impossible. Were "trick cards" a thing when you grew up? That was where someone would take a pair of scissors & cut off colored team names of a half dozen+ cards and scotch-tape them all to one card so "every color" showed and you always won that flip. In our hood you had to agree to their use before a flip but everyone had a few or were making a few.

A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 My brother and I used to do that with our doubles or any card featuring Pascual and/or Melido Perez.

They haven't appeared in any of my local stores yet, so I don't have a true point of reference. This design is *very* 1982. The late 80s sets, for all their weaknesses, made color match flipping a really easy game to learn and play.
