I tend to wonder if they kept the right rookie from last year. Maybe they should have gone with Smitty and sent Rosey back for more seasoning.

They can still send Rosario back to Vegas. Flores or Reyes can get more starts and someone like Ty Kelly or Phil Evans can come up and take a bench spot.

I don't expect that will happen any time soon, if ever, but it's an option.

They're on the mound more and longer because they suck less than the
other starters who can't win 18 games. All starting pitchers are on regularly
so I fixed that for ya too.

No rookie first basemen till they prove they're way too good for the minors. We shoulda learned that last year. Hopefully that's the case before we have to take Gonzo out of his misery

Rosario, I don't mind. He's still real young, he's hitting No. 9, his D has been pretty good when he pays attention and he's going to get better. It's not like we have a better candidate inhouse anyway.

I'm really not looking for Vargas to be spectacular. I want him to give us seven decent innings.

he's not going to. Vargas isn't getting to the third time through a lot. The Mets are hoping for a lot of 5-6 IP 2-3run games from him.

You may be right. I guess I assumed that because Vargas had 29 decisions and 18 wins last year (in 32 starts) that he was going deep into games. But I just looked at his Game Log from 2017. He pitched 7 or more innings in only 7 of his 29 starts. In comparison, Jacob deGrom last year went 7 or more 14 times in 31 starts.

They look pretty committed to Rosario. There really isn't anyone else. You're not going to throw Reyes out there every day and Cecchini isn't really a shortstop, sooo......they're going to ride him for a while.

A-Gon just looks weak out there. The base hits he's getting are from teams defensing him like he's still 2012 A-Gon: lots of dunkers in front of outfielders. They need to say, 'oh well' and get serious about a Bruce/Flores platoon at first, which has the virtue of extra Zimmo. No faith in Smith at this point as he's not exactly tearing it up in Vegas right now. Alonso will pass him next year anyway.

I mean, you could put Cabrera there and play Flores at second I guess. or sign someone/trade someone. But Rosario has potential and you gotta roll with it a little.

I don't mind Rosario, but he's not actually hitting, nor walking. Hopefully he will on both counts. It does seem like sometimes he has good AB but gets a little jumpier late in games in big spots. That's probably just anecdotal though.

I can't remember Conforto's last xbh.

Looks like it's been two weeks. On the other hand, he literally hasn't had a game where he hasn't been on base yet. his wRC+ is still above average. He could certainly help more, production wise, but at least he's getting on.

Happen to be in California today, as I'm running a marathon on Sunday. Sadly it's seven hours north of San Diego. Had the Metsies been playing in SF I'd have been attending. As it is I'll be listening to the first few innings on my phone while watching the sunset over Monterrey Bay, and then coming back to my hotel for the remainder, or, at least, as much of it as I can stay up for.

I closed my eyes for a minute, and there's a run. How'd we score? Huh? What? Huh?

WEST COAST TRIP!

Keith just gave the finger on air!

San Diego was the site of Keith giving his 'no girls on the bench' rant only to find out later that she was part of the training staff.
He had to do a public apology for that one, although anyone who demands he do the same over this 'incident' simply wasn't paying attention to the context.

But hey, at least tonight it took Keith two whole innings to repeat what Gary had previously said (the part about Richards being a former U-Michigan backup QB).
Sometimes he spouts some piece of information while being oblivious to the fact that Gary just said the exact same thing only seconds earlier.

Got the stream working on my laptop in my beautiful little hotel in Pacific Grove, only, my Chromecast doesn't work because the WiFi requires a login prompt. So now I have the game on the laptop on the right side of the screen, and the CPF on the left.

Listened to innings 1-3 from beautiful Asiloma State Beach.

"Who holds the Padres single-season record for homeruns as a catcher?"

I was going to guess Terry Kennedy, but Gary says no. I'm guessing Mike Piazza.

I just looked up [u:33i77rkv]the career[/u:33i77rkv] SDP records where Santiago does have the record for catcher HRs - but that doesn't necessarily mean he has the single season mark.

btw, the club record is only 163 by Nate Colbert who had a short but dangerous peak as a slugger. Only two behind is Adrian Gonzalez.

Vargas tomorrow will make his first Mets start since 2007. I wonder if any other Mets starting pitcher went 11 years between starts for them.

Same.

Pitch count, location, ability to work through mild trouble... it's our second "F@ck It, I'll do this my DAMN self" start in a row. AND we're catching things!

Lóbaton just hit a giftwrapped DP ball, and it got through because they were stupishifting on him. BREAK!
