Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Made necessary by the failures of the Three Sucketeers. Vargas will help some. But he's a 35 year old who pitched to a mid 4's ERA last year. So he'll probably only be back end help. Lugo and Gsellman are always options, but you hate to mess with that bullpen. How did Corey Oswalt look? Didn't watch the game, but it looked like he gave up only that 1 HR last night. Chris Flexen has a 3.79 ERA in LV. Here's an idea. Let's give Paul Sewald his first ever professional start. I'd be willing to see if he could Dillon Gee it for a little while. You figure there won't be any pitching help on the trade market for months.
Chad ochoseis Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 I'm not ready to give up on Wheeler yet, though I'm on board with letting Matz hang out with Harvey in the bullpen. Maybe Harvey can lend Matz some confidence, since he has way too much and Matz doesn't have nearly enough.Gsellman and Lugo are starting pitchers who wound up in the pen because there wasn't room for them in the rotation. I'd put Gsellman back in the rotation over Sewald and see if he's really figured out how to be 2016 Gsellman again.
Lefty Specialist Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 Gsellman looks nasty in the pen. I'd rather take Lugo out and put him in the rotation.Matz probably gets one more chance before he's banished. And Oswalt looked pretty good for his major league debut. Threw strikes and really only gave up the dinger. Two hits, no walks, 4 K's in 4.2 innings.

A spot start for Oswalt would be interesting.I don't expect him to be spectacular or anything, but if Vargas can be a seven-inning pitcher instead of a five-inning pitcher, I think he'll be a big help.

Centerfield Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2018 Author Posted April 26, 2018 You know that if Montero's elbow hadn't fallen off he'd be starting by now.
