G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Multiple outlets reporting and the Mets acknowledging Rusty Staub not doing well.Staub, 73, is no longer responding to dialysis and was taken to a critical care unit. Former teammates were asking for prayers.[...]"Fred and Jeff Wilpon have each reached out to Rusty to wish him well," the Mets said in a statement. "In addition, multiple people in our organization have also been in contact with Rusty. Everyone wishes Rusty and his family nothing but the best in his courageous battle."
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Well, fuck. One of the best citizens in Mets history. All blessings to you, Daniel Joseph.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 That sucks. Rusty Staub is definitely one of the all-time Mets, both for his contributions to the 1973 pennant winner and his role as an elite pinch-hitter when he returned in the 1980s. I was at that 18-inning game in 1985 against the Pirates where they kept switching him between left field and right and he made that running catch.Rusty was my favorite Met for a while there when I was nine years old. (That would have been in 1972.) And, last but not least, he's been an enthusiastic supporter of the Tabloid Cover Derby. He graciously agreed to attend the announcement of the second iteration, back in the autumn of 2016.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2018 Posted March 2, 2018 Considering how huge Rusty has been for a long time now, I can't say I'm surprised by this news even though he's still a few weeks shy of turning 74 (4/1 - if he makes it). Saddened, but not surprised.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 Hoping for the best and wishing for peace for his family.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2018 Posted March 3, 2018 Being born in 1973, the image I have of Rusty is the second iteration of his Met life, the wizened pinch hitter. God bless.

G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2018 Author Posted March 3, 2018 Side note: The Mets leading with F&J reaching out to Rusty reads like preemptive defensiveness after Eddie and Buddy let it be known the Wilpons never called or wrote.

On behalf of everyone at the organization, we send our condolences and sympathies to his family."There was a joint moment of silence for Doubleday and Darryl Hamilton at Citi Field at the outset of the first homestand following their respective passings. I remember it because I was fortunate enough to be in a suite that night and unfortunate enough to be next door to disrespectful dopes who wouldn't quit yapping during it.
