There is absolutely no reason we should be settling for Adrian Gonzalez.

Duda is still out there screaming "cut Adrian"

Wait. Adrian Gonzalez isn't the good-clubhouse-guy Dom Smith insurance policy? He's the nominal starter? Since-FUCKING-when?

And this is why the $60 million that Carlos Santana got from the Phillies was absolute insanity.

I'm trying to figure out what Duda must be asking for if the Rays signed Morrison, who is basically Dudalite, for two years @6.5. Duda made $7.25M last year and shouldn't be expected to sign for much more than that. I'd much rather have Duda for two years at, say, $8.5M per year than Morrison at $6.5M.

It's the Twins who signed him, no?

I kind of like what the Mets are doing. They could get caught with their pants down at first, but I see the sense. I feel good about them getting more production at first than the Twins.

My fear isn't that Gonzalez is washed up or that Smith isn't ready. My fear is that Flores will lose his mojo after 2017 ended with him fouling a ball into his face and smashing his nose. I'm flinching at my desk just recalling it six months later. I'll be watching him closely this spring to see if there are any lingering effects.

Morrison to me seems like they'd be abandoning Dom, where Gonzalez seems like a low-risk, high-reward opportunity. With Bruce and Flores also being options at first, I don't know if we need Morrision.

I said something similar in some other thread, but I'd much rather have Gonzalez/Smith/Flores/Bruce than re-signing Lucas Duda (or signing Logan Morrison). If Gonzalez is anything like the player he was a few years ago, then great. If Smith becomes all that, then great. If Wilmer can stay on the field and continue to hit, then great. If Nimmo/Lagares force themselves into the lineup necessitating Bruce being a full-time first baseman after Conforto comes back, then great. We have options. If we signed Lucas Duda all of that would end (other than Flores being a platoon first baseman). I wish Lucas the best and hope he signs somewhere soon as he deserves a starting ML job but the Mets needed to move on.

Right.

"Planning is everything; the plan is nothing," Eisenhower was quoted as saying. I think the idea behind the quote was that once the chaos of battle ensues, even the best plan will fall apart, and true planning involves preparing your troops to be ready for that, and even expect that, and know how to pivot confidently when that happens.

The layout now allows them a lot of space to be nimble. Where I see a small hole hole in that space though is from the righthanded side. If Flores doesn't bounce back, T.J. won't be ready until mid-season, and maybe neither Gonzalez nor Smith get it done against lefties.

But that's a lot of IFs. Maybe that's where Wright comes in. Maybe Evans. Maybe sometime in his tenure, Frazier sees some time at first.

ROOM TO BE NIMBLE. It's a workable motto.

Note to self: Drink coffee, then post.

And, to be clear, I'm not advocating that either Duda or Morrison should be members of the 2018 Mets; I don't think either of them should be. Just wondering why anyone would choose Morrison over Duda.

Something tells me that Duda needs to get the Rosetta Stone software for Japanese and start developing a taste for sake and wasabi, cause that's where he's headed.

Not news or anything. . .just my guess.

It's a valid point.

Duda struck out 14 less times than Morrison but his 2017 AVG, OBP, and SLG were all significantly lower than Morrison's. And Morrison had trouble even getting this meager contract.

Sayonara, Lucas.

Duda gets $3.5M to man first base for the Royals. It's still good value for the Royals, but Duda hurt his market with his .175/.285/.444 line after the trade to Tampa Bay.

Duda for $3.5 million blocks nobody.

I repeat. There is no reason we should have settled for Adrian Gonzalez.
