I saw that. I don't get SNY but David Rothenberg was nice to share the footage on fb. I have to admit, I got a little excited when I saw the background. A wind was blowing...I had never seen the Sadecki Spot IN ACTION. The stands directly behind Ralph were a surprise. I would have thought they weren't there til the mid 70's.

Agreed. Precedents have been set, so all season? We lost Murph mid season so that was a little different. After his passing, the Mets honored Bob Murphy's memory by wearing a patch on the left sleeve of their uniforms for the rest of the 2004 season.

awww crap. Wherever Ralph went he was a force to be reckoned with.
  7. I like how Turnip would be thrown into any infield position, any time of the game, and he looked as laid back and relaxed filling the spot with leather as anyone I've ever seen. I was always saying give him more at bats, but just to keep him sharp. Turner's a good bench guy in my book.

  13. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Well, not quite three bases. But one of them was first. oy. Someone, please lift this terrible burden of being the quiz master! The answer is in the article! It's under the heading "The Man Who Stole First Base" which inspired the book "The Man Who Stole First Base". This guys antics also were one of the reasons the rule was changed in 1920.

  15. Nobody got this? The quiz is coming from inside that linked article!
  16. Well, not quite three bases. But one of them was first. That's a great link & great info, and down deep in the page is the answer to my quiz. And it says there that two people did it Sorry but I'm crap as a quiz giver. Oh wait, I think it's referring to stealing first base, not three stolen bases including first. So my quiz stands! The rule against stealing bases in reverse came into being in 1920. This amazed me.
  17. An invite? No harm, no foul.
  18. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Jean Segura, last year, no? Not according to my sources, which I might divulge if you really bug me. Whoops, just talked to my source and the info I'm using hit the innerwebs in 2009 so it could be dated. But still, I don't think any one has stolen first base in the last few years. If this story is not true I'm gonna be pissed, because its a really interesting and somewhat funny tale.

Make a meme of it and upload it to Pinterest, because brother, this is what is going to come to pass. Lefty Specialist wrote: Funny story. 20. Edgy MD wrote: Zvon, you answer checker you, you get to ask the next only-player question. May God have mercy on your soul. Don't give me any shit for wanting to learn something new. I thirst for knowledge. I gave it some time for others to speak up. Who is the only player to steal the same base twice in one inning(And three bases total... including FIRST)?
  21. I didn't know this, had to look into it, but lets get this quiz movin again. Robby Thompson, San Francisco Giants, June 27, 1986. It was a 12-inning game and the Giants kept sending their "fast" rookie, Thompson. And he kept getting caught. Four times. What makes that even crazier is that, in the 149 games he played that season, he only successfully stole 12 bases (and was caught 15 times). So by late June, the Giants should've figured out that maybe he wasn't the track star they thought he was.
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm pretty convinced the Mets shortstop won't be Drew (don't wanna spend the $$) and won't be Tejada (attitude & results terrible). Spring training trade involving Doodoo OR Ike and one of the pitching prospects lands a guy like Didi Gregorious with us or maybe even that other Dbaggs SS. WRITE IT DOWN Noted. I thought Tejada was on track to be in good shape and possibly out of the doghouse by seasons start. No? I'm pretty convinced the starting SS will be Tejada at this point. CARVE THAT ON A TREE or something..
  23. I remember thinking Magadan would be the next Wade Boggs when he came up. And recalling that now, what I'm impressed with most is that Boggs had that kind of impact in such a short time. I thought Wade was the best pure hitter in the game about half way into his second season.
  24. SteveJRogers wrote: Yeah, I just saw that...maybe that was just an aged Ryan talking up a Met biased panel of hosts, because he did often speak of being unsure of wanting to stay in the big city and such. Hell, getting traded to California was the best thing that could have happened to his career, more ways than one. It does seem to be revisionist history on his part to suggest that he realizes the business aspect of the game some 30 years after the trade happened. I got the impression that he was speaking in general terms , or trying to, (and from that future perspective) and not intending to put out that he himself was betrayed. I don't think he even mentions the word betrayed, which is a pretty strong and specific word to turn what he did say into. Maybe he was touching on the fact his feelings were hurt a little bit but he was framing that in a generalization, IMO. Quite a leap. It annoys me that someone would take his words from that interview and say what is said on Wikipedia.
  25. Recently I'm reading up on the Nolan Ryan/Jim Fregosi trade. At Wikipedia I read this: Contrary to popular belief, Ryan never wanted to be traded from the Mets and felt betrayed by the team that drafted him. In Matthew Silverman's very kool book New York Mets 50 Amazin' Seasons I read this: Ryan had asked for a trade, mostly because his wife Ruth was frightened by New York, and Ryan worried about her when he was on the road. Which is correct? Unless its sourced, never trust Wiki. Ryan's own autobiographies from the 1990s corroborate with Silverman's story. Kool beans. Thanks Steve It does have a source and I'm listening to it now: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/ivieleagueproductions/2012/03/14/the-kult-of-mets-personalities-nolan-ryan-kris-benson
