  1. Maybe these Asian players should start learning English on their own. afterall, some of them debate posting for years. couldn't hurt to at least go through the basics of Baseball English could it?
  2. Edgy DC wrote: Yeah, sure, but we're looking to get a leg up on the competition. And finding a way to translate Far East ability to US fields more consistently may be one way to do it. minimizing the culture shock is the new market inefficiency. I wonder how this applies to raw 17 year old talent drafted out of Latin America? Probably less of an issue in the low minor leagues..but I wonder how much teams consider bilingualness an asset when hiring a single-A manager?
  3. Thole Paulino Nickeas can I include Piazza 4th for a great catch of a ceremonial first pitch?
  4. Frayed Knot wrote: My main memory of that series is that we shouldn't hit them a lot better than we did. Not only was that staff not all that good but it looked perfectly suited for a lefty-heavy lineup of Mets to tee off on. and if it wasn't for Beltran we may have gotten swept.

  6. Edgy DC wrote: I've read Met fans declare that they hate seeing the catch replayed because of it's associations. I didn't see the catch for about a year after it happened. Although Gary Cohen's play-by-play of it was one of the possible start up sound bytes for MLB The Show 2007 the next year, so that reopened the wounds a bit.

  8. Centerfield wrote: It's crazy the Mets didn't win that game. I thought for sure we were going to the World Series after that catch. Especially after they loaded the bases in the bottom of that inning. Many remember the Beltran called strike three. It kills me to think of that Valentin at-bat. That catch, especially if the Mets won it all, would've gone right up there with like, Buckner. Same with the Ventura Grand Single. instead they stay at 'Pujols off Lidge' status, which is still pretty nice, but..
  9. an Endy.

Edgy DC wrote: Well, yeah, I know there were five books, but if the film wasn't conceived with the intent to start a franchise, I don't put it in the same category as, say, Lost in Space, where the actors all signed on for three films. 6, but okay then. [crossout]Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy[/crossout]
  17. Edgy DC wrote: Was that meant to continue? Have plans for that gone away? well, there are 5 more books in the trilogy. There are no plans for the second book. Adams had worked on the first movie some, and unsuccessfully, but died well before it was ever made. There are petitions out there for it too.
  18. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
  19. Wagner, 5.
  20. I doubt I'd be able to name 5 on the list, but hey.. Brad Lidge, 11th.

I would agree in principal, that IP matters, but when the guy giving you those innings is also the worst starter on the staff by any statistical measurement you want to make, then you have to adjust, it seems to me. Yes, Pelf had more IP than Niese or Gee (Niese got hurt and Gee came up late), but not THAT much more (about 6 more starts, at average of just under 6 IP per start) and he was significantly worse during those innings than either of those guys, any way you look at it. Depends where you assign the most value. by rWAR Cap had 1.7, Gee 1.6, Pelf 1.4, and Niese 1.3. Those are all pretty close. The Mets had no pitching depth, which is why I was valuing IP a little more than normal. Batista ended up doing okay, but I expected worse were the Mets to need another starter in July. Had the team stayed healthy and on the field in the infield, I think the defense would've been much improved, which helps out Pelfrey the most.
  24. seawolf17 wrote: Which is funny, because a little part of me died in 2006. Someday I'm going to wake up from this nightmare, I'll still be in the stands, and Beltran (or Floyd, or Reyes) will hit the ball out, and the Cardinals won't win that WS.
  25. metirish wrote: True, but .....ha, this is why it could drive you crazy......Michael Cain only ever appeared in Cobb's real life and not his dreams....I think...... you think. But there's nothing saying that he couldn't dream him up later either. But he knows how he got to the airport, which is supposedly a sign he's awake. But they don't show how he got to the house ultimately. Anyway, that it can drive you crazy is why I love it. One of my favorite movies in a while.
