Then something I think I'd wrong, "I have never met Johan personally", also I remember an SNY show with Cohen interviewing Seaver and Johan together with Darling I think? After his first season, IIRC. Honest mistake, or sly passive-aggressive dig from the winemeister? that was clearly viewed as professionally. Dickey is awesome too.
  2. 3 minutes. that's all I give it before the backhanded compliment. "How many do the Yankees have now?" etc. Love that he tried to have Beltran on and was denied.

I thought Duke was going under the knife, but it sure didn't sound like Lewin or Ed Coleman or Jiggs McDonald or Juan Berroa or anybody. Yeah, that was Duquette. Lewin was off for some reason or another. someone's graduation. Daughter?
  4. so hard to find backpages of the more obscure papers on the Internet. who cares about the Front? Johan!

The only odd thing - as least as viewed thru TV - was that the ovation for Santana when he came up to bat in the 7th seemed more tepid than one would expect for a pitcher working on a no-hitter. As it turned out, the big 7th inning netted him an 8th inning AB too so the fans had their second chance and, that time, did make the most of it. I think the 7th inning might have been too early to go bonkers about it, probably tempered by the "We're not supposed to talk about it right?" thoughts. The lack of no-hitters was never a black mark, merely a fun piece of Mets lore. The whole count, not tonight boss, etc. This is going to change how we feel when the next guy takes on into the 7th, 8th, etc (unless it's this afternoon) but it's totally worth it.
  6. Best I could find for Mets donut on short notice.

But you have to assume if he'd been fired we'd know and they'd have a replacement. Hoping it's a strained typing thumb or something and not some sudden personal emergency.

  11. mother in law's 70th birthday celebration at a Hibachi place. Caught the Beltran intro to see the crowd reaction and then figured I'd skip a game since it was family time. Peaked at the score occasionally because I'm an addict and have a smartphone. Saw Duda's home run and noticed the Cardinals didn't have a hit but noticed Johan's pitch count and mostly dismissed it. Was there for his last start as a mere mortal and knew he'd been dealing and figured this would be just more of that, lifted after 7, great game, love the comeback, etc. Kept checking. still no hits. ponder the pace of dinner. Will the guy behind the bar over there change the stupid nascar race? Can I duck over to the corner and stream it on my phone? will 3G hold up for the live lookin via the app or should I just put on Howie? We're done with dinner. it's the bottom of the 8th now. just pay and go, can watch the end right? where's our waiter? oh waiter..yeah, that's my credit card sitting there waiting for you...oh waaaiter! Hey busboy, where's our waiter? (someone else eventually takes and runs my card. Probably cost himself $10 there. Get to the car for the start of the top of the 9th, and am pulling up to the house for the final out. Everyone else goes in and I figure I'll go in at the first commercial and switch to SNY but they never go to commercial. I don't think anyone really understood why I sat in the car for 15 minutes, but screw 'em. My wife just watched the last 2 innings on SNY (I loaded up the remote Verizon FIOS DVR app from my phone in the 7th) with me and I think managed, between that and my mood/antsiness all night, to grasp how big a deal it is. I just want to stay up all night and read all the recaps and listen to highlights and whatnot.
  12. well the actual poll doens't mention Johan, so i'm assuming it's asking about Dickey.
  13. #Mets Friday lineup vs. St. Louis: Baxter-LF, Nieuwenhuis-CF, Wright-3B, Duda-RF, Murphy-2B, Davis-1B, Thole-C, Quintanilla-SS, Santana-LHP Welcome back Josh. And you get to bat 7th!
  14. Edgy DC wrote: (I think I found a B.S. lineup.) woah, and it's not even Friday the 13th.
  15. Edgy DC wrote: I'm going to go with third base and number one starter. Or, as it turns out, third base and number two starter. Well, granted he's hitting .370 or whatever, but the drop off from Thole->Nickeas was pretty bad.
  16. SS and C depth were probably the worse possible places though.
  17. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I'm simply not on board with the absolutely ridiculous pollyanna notion that it's supposed to be some cause for celebration should the Mets spend the rest of eternity going 71-91 every goddamn season. Pollyanna? There are very many people who've been telling me since the start of 2011 that the Mets will suck for a couple of years and that's okay because there's a shot they'll be starting to be good in 2014 or so. Mets Willets Point wrote: Last year I took my son to a game in the 500s for $15 a ticket. Sat right behind homeplate and had a great view of everything. And despite being near the back row, I still felt closer to the action than the the front row of the Upper Deck at Shea. I like the ballpark, and as I've said before the main thing I'd would've liked is a more of a neighborhood location rather than the same old sea of parking that surrounded Shea Stadium. Shea didn't celebrate history at all except for some hard to see banners as you went (often walked) up huge escalators. Obviously the neighborhood was/is the same and they're "working on it" or whatever. I wonder what the general fan perception would've been if they'd moved elsewhere in Queens in order to find a better neighborhood? or *gasp* Brooklyn. That place the Nets are going probably would've been a fairly decent location, Sterling-wise. Would've been able to have all sorts of business ventures and apartments and what not around the stadium right?

The problem is that tickets to that team are priced as if the team has a regular streak of seasons with 82 or more wins. Tickets are priced as an entertainment option in NYC. We've had this discussion before, but especially this year tickets are extremely affordable. Yes, you need to pay more for more access and closer and better games but there are so many under $20 tickets that get you a very good view of the game.
  19. batmagadanleadoff wrote: They averaged 40K by drawing 50K on weekends and 25-35K on cold weekday night games. The smaller stadium discourages many fans from even considering attending a game. But the Wilpons couldn't give a shit so long as attendance multiplied by the price of admission is satisfactory. And they could care less about how much goodwill they squander in order to hit their goals. yup. That's every business ever. And it's a really sucky trend around baseball in general with all the payrolls and expenses skyrocketing the mean price for tickets goes up and up. It's also not just baseball. Right now there are scores of affordable seats thanks to sucking and economy. if they make the playoffs and are averaging 32k in September, next year it'll be a lot harder. Personally I would've preferred they build an extra 10k seat upper deck with crappy views and cheap seats, but hell they were paying for it themselves and they would probably never even break even on the added construction costs and operation expenses of building that. If the Mets start competing and maxing out, it's practically a given that they'll find a way to add a couple thousand extra seats. They didn't sell the place out in 2009 despite coming off a competitive year and it being a new building and they were above .500 into July and only 2 games below going into August with still the hope of reinforcements and a run, so it's not like they completely sucked.
  20. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Great. "We can build a tiny 40,000 seat stadium in New York City because we're better than the '62 Mets. Mingle with your fellow pissers without mingling your actual piss." Mets averaged 41k or so (capacity of Citi is 41.8 and they could push that to 44 if they were selling out) in 2006. they got higher in 2007 and 2008 but a large part of that was Shea Goodbye. They've never topped 40k without Citi Field looming. Why bother building another deck of further away crappy seats for people that are probably not going to come?
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think the Mets have the edge in the cap thing at this point (assuming, of course , that there will be a plaque to put that cap on) but if he wins an MVP and a couple of World Series with the Cardinals that may change. Does Kansas City have a shot? 44games 128 PA more with the Mets than the Royals. (which would be the only other cap option barring him spending the next 7 years dominating with the Cardinals) Also has 10 games and 45 PA in the postseason for the Mets though, including a 1.054 OPS in the NLCS. His Gold Gloves and Silver Sluggers are all with the Mets. B-R gives him 7.1 more WAR with the Mets than the Royals.
