  2. yeah, I'd said Manuel was the worst manager ever above so I figured the order was obvious.
  3. Edgy DC wrote: You're Dan Warthan. How do you begin to fix Parnell? He's a liar. he needs to stop lying. stop lying Bobby! Seriously though, Is Parnell actually broke, or just 'slumping'? He walked two but got some ..decently? hit outs. Didn't give up the run. the curveknuckle thingy is a new pitch for him, so it might just be he needs to make another adjustment as people are getting used to it. He seems to be just a bit off with his location lately, but I'm not actually worried about it yet.
  4. bmfc1 wrote: We were told that he is an excitable boy but for the most part he has been reserved. He seems to be a strong leader and has the respect of the team. Sadly, he is a bad in-game manager, making changes and bunting when "the book" says he should. I'll say this though, my favorite thing about Terry is that he's not afraid to say he was wrong, and adjust. He free admits to making a ton of mistakes in previous managerial stints and this attitude always leaves me with the feeling that if presented with enough evidence he'll make a needed change. Some of the comments he made this Spring Training revolved around fixing up some of the stuff that went wrong last year and I think the added shifting and the seemingly better pitcher bunts and such seem to be born out of that adjustment.
  5. metirish wrote: This is the first I have heard about extending Terry......not a priority, agree with Bucket there , although I think this front office would not appoint a person radically different than Terry if it came to that, a so called free thinker(whatever that means) like Joe Madden doesn't strike me as an Alderson type...... people mention it on Twitter occasionally. Not real people mind you, but the sentiment is out there and it's only a matter of time before some of the national writers or beat guys start talking about it. Managers often get credit for perceived over-performance.
  6. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: That's why I find all this "extend him NOW!!!!" talk is a little unrealistic. yeah, no on that. I never worry about a managers contract, no reason to get locked in. I think it also helped that Collins had a year here, knew the organization, specifically the minor leaguers. So now when he gets these guys called up, he knows them a little.
  7. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Or maybe it's just because he's coming in after the worst manager in Mets history. Here's my personal list of the five worst Mets managers that I saw: Worst - Dallas Green (a moron and an asshole) Next - Willie Randolph ( a moron and a half) 3d - Jeff Torborg 4th - (tie) Art Howe; Jerry Manuel Mine's obviously a very small sample. Willie gets points for getting the Mets to the postseason, and i think he managed differently, and better, while there so that definitely bumped him up for me. Valentine, Randolph, Howe, Manuel. I wasn't really following closely enough for Green, and everyone else I was too young for.
  8. metirish wrote: No more talk of threading water until so and so pitcher/hitter comes back, the guys that replaced them need to produce. The players seems to really like playing for him and he seems to genuinely care about them. I think there's a decent amount of value in this, in the accountability. As far as some of the more 'in the game' moments, I think he's average, but that's probably fine. Or maybe it's just because he's coming in after the worst manager in Mets history. I'd quibble with a couple of his bullpen priorities and his infatuation with platoon matchups, but overall i think he's doing an okay job. I'll sum it up with a Collins like quote: "He's a baseball manager"
  9. I'm not quite sure what the logic behind when to dress up is, since they did it twice, but never against an NL east opponent.
  10. yeah, but what do they wear for the next leg of the road trip to the Bronx?
  11. soupcan wrote: Zvon wrote: 1976 was the last time the Mets had 3 shutouts in a row? Wow. Not true. Maybe they were talking about complete game shutouts but that info is erroneous. Mets shut out the Phillies 3 in a row at Citi in either 2010 or 2009. I was at the third game of that series. Goose Egg Sweep!
  12. Edgy DC wrote: Nickeas hits a grand slam and gets shipped out. Baxter saves a no-hitter and hits the DL. Nobody leaves the room until he makes a memory indelible enough to at least earn him a share of the post-season pie. Nickeas didn't go anywhere. I'm not sure Rob Johnson had any real delible contribution.
  13. Farmer Ted wrote: Ramirez not available? Blew out his tire running in from the bullpen for the Johan celebration Friday night? guess so. Satin for Baxter, don't see a corresponding bullpen move but supposedly it's Carson.
  14. ..........and he's back.
  15. Dickey 5.0 Wright 1.5 Murphy 1.0 Thole 1.0 Quintanilla 0.5 Davis 0.5 Duda 0.5
  16. Do I go? Metsblog/bloggers tailgate before the game too. big shoes for Niese.
  17. But if you think that's impressive, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Dickey extended his winning streak to three straight starts, a rather humble run of success ... unless you consider that he struck out 30 batters and walked only one in those games. Only six other pitchers in major-league history posted wins in three straight starts, recording at least 30 strikeouts and walking fewer than two batters. That impressive list includes not only the aforementioned Santana, but also Walter Johnson, Bert Blyleven, Frank Tanana, Mike Mussina, and Pedro Martinez, who did it twice.
  18. Santana 6.0 Baxter 3.0 Duda 0.5 Thole 0.5
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: The Tiggers tried about 15 different ways to blow that game. And Valverde flat out sucks. yup. Verlander tomorrow off of two consecutive losses. Never happens. Hard to see him losing that game. Some people harping on this schedule difficulty for the Mets coming up, and I get the sense it's their personal bet with the team "Get through these games that I think should dominate you, and then I'll believe". I wonder what it feels like next weekend. Mets exciting fun gutty team against the tired, old and unclutch Yankees. Could be a chance to really assert themselves. Also a huge first place showdown with the Nats first.
  20. Edgy DC wrote: So, we need another outfielder --- or at least outfielder type --- to fill Baxter's spot, at least until Bay returns. Rottino's been playing there, so he can be the 5th OF guy right? I don't know if that's "Ideal" but Bay DH'd today so that's at least a step down the path towards recovery. 10 days maybe? if he can start playing the field soon..
  21. Omir Santos walk off sac fly (because the Tigers have TWO active injured catchers) seals the win for the Tigers over the Yankees (puts them 1.5 behind the Mets btw) with Verlander going tomorrow. McCarver calls it the "biggest moment in Santos' life" Also, they remind us it's Mets Yankees on Fox next Saturday. is it too late to go to that one?
  22. Met Hunter wrote: Listened to Howie and Josh talk about the number parallels and try to imply that our late great catcher Gary Carter provided some divine intervention. Mets had 8 runs, 8 hits. Add up the pitch count 1+3+4=8. Johan is #57, Gary 57 when he passed. Then it dawned on me that somebody wearing a Carter tshirt was celebrating with the Mets after the win. And to think security pummeled him. Howie and Josh made a big deal of "Not Today" winning the 10th race at Belmont today in relation to @metswfan nightly/daily "Not today/tonight boss"
  23. round the league scoreboard update on Yanks broadcast (drove 2 minutes to get pizza) Suzyn noted the strikeouts and the 8-1 record. Sterling: "Most underrated pitcher in baseball"
  24. themetfairy wrote: smg58 wrote: Honestly, I'm surprised anybody thought he was worth a claim. The Jays must be very short on AAA depth. Howie was commenting about this on the radio today. He said he wasn't trying to be mean, but that he couldn't figure out what the Blue Jays could have scene in Schwinden in his Major League appearances to make them want to claim him. do they have 40man space? it's not like he's 35. sometimes all it takes is a different set of advice from a different set people to make that next jump.
  25. Ashie62 wrote: My memory is Ceetar posting after a Schwinden outing "one start closer to Harvey." Wish they'd been a wee bit more quality starts closer to Harvey *or whoever*. Seems like he could've contributed a bit once maybe he settled down, but ultimately not even worth the 40 man spot and won't likely be missed.
