July 10 is the All-Star Game. That works for me. I'd bring back Dickey to start the first game after the break too, to insure he faces both the Braves and the Nats, but that's getting ahead of ourselves. But with the exception of t he last place Phillies, the Mets don't play a division rival until after, so there isn't a lot of worry about aligning the rotation that way.

From the way Kevin Goldstein was explaining it, there are a lot of those guys. 29 Austin Barr, c (HS) is another. It sounds like the Mets/other teams took a lot of these risky sign guys figuring they'd have to throw money at one or the other but wanted to draft a couple so they definitely get one. He was practically positive Barr goes to Stanford and if the Mets spent bonus money on Oswalt that probably means they won't have the extra Barr would need.

I was thinking as it was developing that for Reyes or another similar runner that's maybe a double even though it never got near the wall. watching replay, you're right, it was Duda. Looked like it might be able to get past him, but died on the grass. probably had some back spin, although Duda did cover the ground fairly well.

Get a couple of guys into the Rolaids race and we could really be talking about something. Wouldn't it? My wife has been to two games so far this year, has yet to see the bullpen. She needs to go more often. Also to note: Dickey does indeed come to bat to the theme song from the Game of Thrones.
  7. Thoughts from the game? The crowd was into it. Slowly at first, but building, and always more into the top of the inning than the bottom. In a weird way, Johan Santana's no-hitter is being overshadowed. (He might have something to say about that tomorrow) Watched Dickey from section 138, which is two over the apple. lots of fun. You could certain tell they were getting a lot of silly swings. Really Awesome. (That's what the Mets put on the board at the end) Davis' grand slam came almost right at us, and as such was hard to judge off the bat. (Also, we saw an employee run down an inning later to the Party City deck with a bat and return with a ball. I suspect Ike wanted his first career grand slam) His line out to left field got there reallll fast. I was enjoying watching Dickey's ERA slowly approach 2.00 on the scoreboard. I also was enjoying the (At least two) separate K corners. or dicKKKKKKKKKKKKKey corners anyway. This team has a Cy Young, MVP, and Rookie of the Year candidate approaching the halfway mark. That's pretty cool. First shake shack of the year. We got there, through the line, two beers at Big Apple Brews and in our seat just in time for the game to start. The game ended so fast that even waiting for Dickey to be interviewed and then leaving through traffic and we were home to Jersey by 10:30. I'd forgotten about Brian Roberts crazy no-rbi streak until my wife noted that he only had 4 and asked if he sucked. Curtain call for Ike was nice.
  8. Don't we usually have a lineup by now? this is making me nervous.
  9. Orel Hershizer? (yeah, I can't spell)
  10. Could probably make a case for Sheffield right?
  11. I won Mets tickets on Pinterest the other day for tonight since it's social media night. So apparently I'll be there.
  12. Edgy DC wrote: Johnson is certainly a defensible choice, given the unfortunate shortness of Hodges' tenure, but these are supposed to be hard choices. Nice to see Cleon get his day. Folks typically forget about Cle' when doing these things. Except when packing sweet potatoes or eating pizza anyway ;-)

Assuming he's out from the year, which is pretty much completely unknown given the nature and (lack of) understanding of brain injuries, he won't affect roster spots or anything like that. Gotta pay him anyway. even if there's a .001% he comes to Spring Training hitting every ball over the wall. Kinda sucks though. I'd half wondered if it was that concussion that fully ruined Bay (and just a bad coincidence/bad start that he'd been poor before that) I can't imagine another one raising his chances at becoming a serviceable player again. I kind of wonder that about Ryan Church too. He'd had a pretty good year the year before and a good start, then concussion 1, concussion 2, retired..

  15. Ashie62 wrote: Kirk vs. Bryce for ROY. Brought to you by Omir Santos. presumably there are a couple of other candidates right?
  16. Frayed Knot wrote: The only thing that changes when they're playing an NL East team is that I feel less pissed-off if they do win. What really bugs me about this is that we got swept by them and it changed the whole dynamic. They're now on some crazy win streak and we've been struggling. The Mets and Yanks met as equals (win% wise) and now blah. While it's too early to 'need' their help, them winning really does help and that's where it's irksome. If the Nats had like a 2-3 game lead you could be like "whatever, we'll take care of it".
  17. I was pulling out of the parking lot onto 126th by the time Freese swung at the third strike in the no-hitter 9th inning recap they did. Concerts not really my thing. Did snap this photo during the 4th inning though, of them behind Citi.

  19. Draft picks with Wright Valdespin is using this bat: Hey look it's Edgardo Alfonzo with a bag of yams Cleon Jones with a Cleon(patra) Jones pizza slice I'm really going to miss this Valdespin in the cage ~ 4th inning. Time to go home.
  20. Thoughts: Screw you classless Mets fans booing Jason Bay as he walks off the field with a possible concussion. That play almost seemed to rattle Gee, who did at least settle down. Do the Mets come out flat first game after a flight? It seems that way. They've definitely lost 3/4, Washington, NY, not Tampa, tonight. Mets seem to be heating up power wise. This is a good thing, but they managed to be stifled otherwise tonight. If the power, and Davis, are truly going to be there, this offense will be really good. Murphy's starting to worry me a little bit. Collins says he's not tired or anything when asked about resting him some, even talked himself into getting to play second yesterday instead of DHing. The Cleon (patra) Jones Two Boots Pizza Slice was pretty good. Was interesting to see the two first round draft picks. They didn't really say much beyond the typical "put your work in, gotta work hard. improve 1% every day" stuff. The SS, Cecchini?, mentioned something about why he was wearing #2, but Sandy say his comment was stricken from the record so I don't know what it was. Not sure what to make of Elvin Ramirez. He seemed okay that first inning, then struggled and then bounced back.
  21. bmfc1 wrote: This weekend, we have to root for the MFYs. (Sigh.) no we don't, playoff hopes don't ride on this, Mets still have a ton of games against the Nationals via which they can take care of them themselves. I'll simply see the silver lining in either result.
  22. What was surprising to me was that article I read that said the Mets were assholes for putting in the protest. Wha? Of course they should go through the motions? Why not?! Well, the 'Why Not' is because, even if successful, it serves to boost the interests of one player but at the expense of another. And all of it for the purpose of creating a somewhat artificially contrived 'moment' that the team can celebrate. Or, to put it another was, it's like on 'Scrubs' when Dr. Cox said to Elliot right after losing a patient just before his shift ended and she wanted to delay recording it until just after midnight: "There's nothing wrong with a one-hitter, there, Barbie. In fact, it's miraculous. And I won't have you of all people cheapen what should be an endless pursuit of perfection just because you want the world to laugh with you tonight." Actually, Collins put it this way: "We think it might've been an error because David usually makes that play. Since he's so good, when he doesn't make that play it's natural to assume it might be an error." Phyllis Merhige
