  1. It's no mystery why it happened: The Mets couldn't be bothered to check the accuracy of anything, that's the way they do things. Now, when? I don't remember. no one checks the accuracy of anything. The world is a mess of office workers punching clocks that just don't care about fact checking. but if all the official Mets stuff says '86, including multiple Wikipedia entries theoretically edited by fans that hopefully remember? I'd go with that and guess MLB/elsewhere is goofing up based on something else.

  3. https://twitter.com/JBoyd016/status/216629085730906112 Well an 80 isn't a bad way to finish, time to load up and head home for a short break then Brooklyn here I come. Been a fun ride Tally.
  4. I'd lean towards Mercury if you're sitting somewhere Gary or Howie can see you from the booth because I think it'd intrigue them.
  5. Edgy DC wrote: They no doubt could provide more in the power department --- but that's all the more reason to go with Rottino over Turner last night, no? Is Rottino actually a power hitter? Doesn't seem like it. He hit 11 in the minors last year, but it was the PCL. Turner had 10 in the International League in 2010. Ike doing better should be a huge deal in the SLG dept. let's hope that's for real and he stops with the oysters. Theoretically the warmer weather should lead to Murphy and co poking one or two more out? Can we actually find a power hitting utility guy that we trust to not completely suck? particularly a MIer? Who's out there? It might not be a horrible idea to break the OBP mold with a .250/.310/.450 type guy that's going to going to capitalize on the "The Mets work counts, I can sneak a first pitch meatball here.." relievers.

I think they do if they're not giving first base to Turner or the bullpen to Batista. I dunno, are they really worse than the guys other teams run out there? I don't think so. Batista had a really bad start to the season but he actually hasn't been bad lately. Turner's only recently back from the DL. Problem was more that Ike was out. Ty Wigginton has a .314 OBP Jayson Nix also .314 OBP. They slug better than Turner though, but it seems like the Mets prioritized OBP..) ?#mets? bullpen has a 4.69 ERA in June. 7 HR and 26 BB. 1.54 K/BB rate. This is a decent tick better than April/May, but that may just be due to subtracting Acosta more than anyone actually pitching better. solution? More Parnell, less Batista who are the extremes in the K/BB dept. Rauch actually has a good K/BB rate too, though more because he walks no one. I would guess that means he should be used in clean innings so BABIP luck doesn't kill him?
  7. Kinda, you know, get enough bats to force the other guy to burn through his bullpen. I read something yesterday that Bill James wrote: "Strategy comes to the fore when talent recedes." Work on getting the talent in place, have confidence in your talent, and back off on the strategy. Well, they don't really have the talent, at least, they can't hang with the best team in terms of talent with the 25 or 24 or 23 they run out there most nights. Maybe, maybe not. Where exactly did Cory Wade and Coby Appely or whatever the hell his name is come from? We did in fact chase CC in the 6th. 3.1 innings of bullpen work and the Yankees bullpen was present all weekend, they just didn't push the runners across despite drawing plenty of walks and some hits.
  8. Nymr83 wrote: Too many relievers, not enough platoons/pinch-hitters is a common theme across the league these days. When the Mets say "bullpen help" they really mean "warm body with arm attached" because he isn't really going to HELP, is he? Given the number of guys who barely hit AND have adequate defensive replacements (catcher, 2B, sometimes SS/1B, outfielders) a bat like Pascucci would be more valuable than another reliever. Heck the Mets could go 11-man if they are willing to carry both Batista and Hefner for multiple inning stints (the remaining 4 would be Francisco, Parnell, Rauch, and Byrdak for now) and then have room for a positionless pinch-hit slugger (think Thome) While I don't deny I'd like a more righty power bat off the bench guy (I think I even advocated for it instead of Turner preseason, who really seems like he could/should be the odd man out) I'm not sure I believe Pascucci is necessarily capable enough for that. Easier said than done, but I think the payoff is better trying to figure out why Murphy/Tejada/Turner/Torres/Thole have 2 HRs total. I know none of them are even remotely sluggers, but preseason you'd probably figure you'd have 10-15 from them to this point right? That's not very much but an extra 10-60 runs is a decent uptick. It really plays in in games like this weekend, when the margin for error was so low that them capitalizing more on our errors than us theirs was the difference. compared to Friday when Davis knocked one over the fence for a sudden +3 that was awesome. (Stupid Oysters. "For appearing on Mets Extra, Ike Davis gets a gift certificate to the Grand Central Oyster Bar!" Thanks Ed Coleman..)

  10. Edgy DC wrote: Do you really think it's necessary to tell me that? if you're going to assert that it's a concern. yeah. The reason there's 90 or so more games to go is so that the teams can discern themselves from each other. and Interleague and the ability for teams near each other to win and lose together plays in too. Now that we get back to them playing each other, probably more opportunity for discernment.
  11. strained oblique, technically. Parnell is awesome and rested though, so we'll go with that if Dickey only goes 8.
  12. Welcome Back R3 (Ruben, Ramon Ramirez) Jordany off to the Anchor Bar. other move pending. (Q? )
  13. Edgy DC wrote: Five teams within a game for the wild card at this point in the season is a little, I don't know. It's something of a concern. The further back in the pack you go for your playoff teams, the less distinct from each other they grow. well..it's not even the halfway point.
  14. Nova Young. Nova got a lot of calls off the plate inside to righties (or outside to lefties?) Young got one or two there but they were a lot closer than Nova's.
  15. okay, some thoughts: The Yankees seem to play some questionable defense positions. Particularly it seemed like they were playing way in with two outs, first and third, and Josh Thole up. If the Mets had made more contact, I wouldn't be surprised if this had burned them. I know it's accepted and 'part of the game' but I hate the tactic of spending 2 minutes on the mound pretending like you're discussing strategy only to return after the mound visit to make the pitching change. It reeks of the 'clock management' stuff that goes on in other sports. I wish umpires would speed these things up a bit too. Has it seemed like they're allowing longer mound visits this year than in recent years? Start awarding the batter balls and they speed up these things. That said, there is obviously value to it and I'm not totally against it but the Yankees seem to really push the envelope. For instance, Chris Young probably could've used 30 seconds to slow the pace down a little after Duda's error(s) out there. Kept score last night for the first time this year. spilled beer on my scorecard. hey, at least it wasn't on my new "Duda-Bides" shirt. With the exception of a couple of off-handed comments here and there (not shouted at the field, just commented out loud) the fans behaved fairly well. I made the occasional derisive remark against the Yankees too so all's fair I guess. (there was one fight after the game was over that I noticed.) This is an aside, although I'm sure the game played into it. Traffic was horrendous yesterday. Worst i've seen it in at least a year. Got stuck in traffic driving from Jersey to Valley Stream/my brewery to start making Strawberry Kirk NieuwenWeiss. (traffic on the Throgs neck. Cross Island looked jammed. Clearview was jammed. exits for GCP and LIE were jammed. exit for hillside avenue was jammed. jammed!) Traffic going to the game from LI was bad too. Cross Island. Grand Central. horrible. they closed the gates right behind us into the main lot, so at least we got lucky in that regard. Got a drink afterwards in Bayside and still sat in horrendous traffic on the cross island (Throgs Neck bridge was closed. ) bleh! Traffic in the stadium was better. Obviously lines were crowded but nothing I saw was that horrible. little bit of gridlock filing into the staircases to get out, but nothing crazy. Murphy seems to be maybe coming out of his slump a little? Was hitting the ball hard, I was sure that last one was gone. (we were Promenade behind Yankee dugout, so really no way to judge how fast it was going) Presumably the Yankees turned on the tractor beam and kept in the park, and somehow Swisher got over there. Is this game Ike Davis' fault? I feel like there were pinch hitting opportunities that Terry usually goes to for handedness that he didn't last night. short bench? Did the Mets get overly power hungry? were they swinging too hard? a billion Ks and so many opportunities for a choked-up liner over/off the frequently pulled in infield would've been huge. The homeplate umpire was soooo slow making calls. I know I have a bad tendency to look away at other things (although in this case it was my scorecard) but there were so many time I thought it was a K and he must've tipped it or something. so many times were I thought it was a ball and suddenly he's rung up. Maybe the Mets weren't power hungry, just failed to 'adjust' to a bad strikezone that was non-condusive to working counts?
  16. Mets had a couple of games in YSIII they might've won if they played at Citi, last night was one they might've won had they played in the Bronx. I just got home. it's 2am. maybe I'll bring some 'thoughts' tomorrow.

Maybe just use him after the All Star break when the first 12 games are in the East. He can train up from Atlanta to DC to New York. If he's still in the condition where he can't get on a plane, he's not symptom-free or ready to return to baseball.
  18. Nova sorta sucks. minus the sorta. I'm looking forward to watching this thrashing, shake shack in hand. (well, probably not. Did the Shake Shack thing Monday. I'm feeling fried pie.) This is the game I'm taking the baseball virgin to.
  19. mets with their fourth consecutive win against teams that have called themselves the Baltimore Orioles.
  20. 8pm start. I bet this hurts old man Pettitte the worst.
