  2. Rollins, Polanco, Utley, Ruiz, Pence, Victorino, Wigginton, MAYBERRY, Worley leaving work in 13 minutes.. come on already,b aseball!
  3. Chase field really seems to yield some long ones. Here's a 30 foot shorter one, that's still completely massacre'd, but Beltran. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=21267169&c_id=mlb
  4. He will always score bigger at home than at the park.
  5. Former Mets: backup catcher Brian Schneider: He sucks. 1 more XBH than Mike Nickeas (but 7 less RBI). park adjusted I imagine that's roughly the same. 1B/UT Ty Wigginton: .312 OBP and .699 OPS. That'd probably be okay if he wasn't primarily starting. Raul Valdes: somehow this guy's been pretty good. Perhaps the suckiness was isolated to Metsdome although his IP since is only a third of what he pitched in 2010. Maybe Manuel just overused him. 2.94 ERA with 21Ks in 19 IP. Presumably has a World Series ring?, traded from Cardinals to Yankees last year. Jason Pridie: 1 AB. made out.
  6. would be a pretty sizable upgrade over say Miguel Batista. I doubt they'd have to give up much for him.
  7. Edgy DC wrote: I don't quite get close analysis of batting average on balls in play for hitters. I mean, yeah, any time a guy is widely divergent from his career norms, that increases the likelihood of a regression to the mean, but no more with any other stat --- batting average, slugging, walking, striking out. The notion to pay more attention to batting average on balls in play was conceived to better analyze pitchers, for whom the stat is much more volatile. Well, I wasn't really doing 'close analysis' but it's not meaningless either. Was just looking at the stats to see what I could see. There's a lot of luck in play once the ball leaves the bat, and if more balls are aimed right at guys they'll be caught. With Ruiz, it's not absurdly high so it's partially due to simply seeing the ball well, which is probably also why is BB% is waaaay down. His HR% is absurdly high though, and that's probably where you'd expect the 'come back to earth' bit to come from. Especially in non-CBP parks. He's got roughly same ratio of ground balls to fly balls that he always has, but his GO/AO ratio is high, which is probably due to a lot of those fly balls going over the fence instead of into gloves. Sustainable? who knows. I would suspect not.

Carlos Ruiz continues to be pretty damn good, in fact he's their best player. 1.000 OPS and a .356 BA.(.002 ahead of Wright) His .371 BABIP is roughly 80 points above his career norm. (Wright's is higher, but only .055 higher than career norm) He also leads the league in HBP with 12 (This is usually Utley's category. What does that hitting coach teach these guys?) He's a contact guy, only 32 Ks and 16 walks. I suspect this means he'll chase Niese's curve, but the Mets defense could grant him bases if they're not careful. Luckily he's a catcher and not fast.

Though I would mostly describe it as a glorified commercial for the Home Run Derby. Wow, an ESPN event with lead announcer Chris Berman hyping an upcoming ESPN event with Chris Berman as its lead announcer. No way anyone coulda seen that one a'coming!! I'm on that Fan At Bat email list that sends out surveys occasionally. had one for the festivities and a couple of questions were about the announcers and the announcing team. This is either a broad survey or they're aware of a dislike for Buck/McCarver Berman..

  11. lol. I don't know if the La Russa hates Dusty Baker storyline has any legs (have they said anything?), but Cueto did deserve to go.
  12. TransMonk wrote: I like the Wiggy idea. I wonder what Philly would ask for to trade him within the divison. Justin Turner.
  13. Mets Willets Point wrote: I just don't see what the BFD is. Wright is an All-Star and all that matters is that we'll be able to look at his Baseball Reference page and see he was an All-Star in 2012. As for the boring exhibition game that most players fall all over themselves to avoid playing, I'm sure Wright will get an at-bat, perhaps even a hit (and it will be forgotten within 24 hours). Then he'll be subbed for another 3rd-baseman. because 'boring exhibition' is your opinion. Because it matters to some that our players are truly appreciated. Do most players fall over themselves to avoid playing? These are baseball players. Almost all of them (non-Yankee division) go anyway. Do you really think they're desperate not to stand on the field for a couple of innings? 2-3 innings out of however many thousands they play a year? Because on some level Wright may be wondering "Maybe fans don't really appreciate me"? Maybe it's not a BFD, but it's at least a D. Maybe the players don't take it seriously, but I bet most of them appreciate the love and support and recognition. Forgotten? maybe, maybe not. Wright has a hit in every All-Star Game I believe. He hit a home run in the 2006 game.
  14. MFS62 wrote: What's a chase percentage? What's a good number? Is it better to be higher or lower than that? Later chase percentage would be pitches swung at outside the zone. I don't know what's considered 'good' and I suspect there's a lot of variable to that that hasn't been figured out.
  15. on second thought, apathy probably isn't the answer. Next year I'm pushing a 'vote for XXX" where XXX is the stupidest player (chase Utley this year perhaps) on the ballot, while campaigning for a purely statistical selection process.
  16. Frayed Knot wrote: btw, it's not clear from the reading if everyone here was in on where Seawolf was going there with his description of the Mariners' recent pen acquisition -- "a lefty. Just called him up. Five and a third innings, five hits, one run, two walks, and six Ks. Could probably come cheap." -- but it's a reference to one Oliver Perez. IOW, all that glitters is not necessarily gold. and a clear reason why not to overreact to small sample sizes, whether or not they're on our team.
  17. It's also possible Ramon Ramirez reverts to being the excellent reliever he's been for most of his career.
  18. from a chat: Rick Hernandez (Pasadena, CA) Pluto. Planet or Kuiper belt object? Clayton Kershaw (1:13 PM) I don't know if you know this or not, but my great-uncle discovered Pluto, so I'll stick with his definition of it as a planet.
  19. Things look a little dusty in LA. anyone have a broom? Dillon Gee against Clayton Edward Kershaw (hmm.. Nathan Edward Eovaldi was yesterday.. lots of Eds) Kershaw claims to be the great-nephew of the discoverer of Pluto, presumably astronomer Clyde Tombaugh.
  20. seawolf17 wrote: Todd Coffey running in slow motion is TERRIFYING. yeah. real poor use of the super slow mo cam.
  21. Edgy DC wrote: Where the heck is Beato? Gary, if you're reading, listen, as this team's bullpen hasn't performed up to what they've hoped since 2006 (when Willie routinely used his Heilman, Sanchez, and Mota for two innings at a time), please tell somebody in management that it isn't the makeup but the usage. Experience in New York? Please! Stop the madness. It'd be fine to have another capable arm, but I have little reason to believe that arm isn't attached to Beato, Ramirez, and Edgin rather than a veteran with a choice makeup. I agree, Beato, Ramirez, edgin, etc. (even Meija/Harvey/Wheeler?) could help the pitching, which hasn't been bad (it's been above average in June) lately. I'm curious to see how Collins starts to handle things in August and September as they remain competitive. Does he go into "You've earned my trust, I'm gonna push you" mode with guys like Parnell, and only use Batista for crap innings?
  22. DH baseball isn't really baseball.
  23. A winning record for June is one the line today. (14-13 so far) Santana is on the mound for the Mets, versus Nate Eovaldi who I'm pretty sure either has an extra vowel or is missing a consonant in his last name Scouting book says this: Nathan (not 'Nate', not ever 'Nate') Eovoldi is a hard-throwing, easy-armed righthander working his way to Dodger Stadium as a top Los Angeles prospect. With a 94mph fastball that looks effortless, Eovoldi worked his way right up to a sample start in Arizona last year, striking out seven in a five inning debut before removing himself via an embarrassing fielding tumble. He'll compete for a starting gig in 2012, and could very well win one despite his young age. Even if he doesn't, he should be in Dodger Blue before the season is half-finished. oh..and it's on Fox. sorry.
  24. Edgy DC wrote: No, some other guys on the radio feed. bah. I'm out of ideas. SNY tells me this VErizon Fios Quantum thing will CHANGE THE INTERNET.
  25. he does the radio too right? surely the mlb.tv at bat feed isn't too taxing for your computer right?
