He's gonna get to pitch one way or another, so we should probably root for success in whatever role he gets rather than demand greater honors up front. Cain's not going to have egg on his face if he gives up 2 runs in the first. By anyone but us anyway. But it's that unfairness/bias that is the reason they should've chosen Dickey in the first place. You'll always be able to start a fireballing starter having a good first half, Dickeyesque stories are quite rare, and rarer still that they're arguably the best pitcher in baseball. And I know MLB and half the sarcastic world trumpets "this time it counts" but what it's really about is celebrating baseball.

  3. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'll never get all the hate for Sherman. He's a good writer and scoops everyone. It's stuff like this: And, come on, isnt there a little part of everyone still wondering just how long the R.A. Dickey magical, mystery knuckleball tour can extend? nope. It's been a long time now. Earlier this year: If Ike Davis needs a patron saint, someone to remind him that a season can be salvaged even at this late date, then we offer up Russell Martin. Martin is at .179 now. Sherman did no research (typical of his stuff that I've seen) and assumes that a hot week from Martin somehow was going to make him the player he hasn't been in four years. It has very little to do with a young player returning from injury and off to a slow start and all that is/was Ike Davis' slump. It was sloppy "Pick the first Yankee guy we can compare him to" post.
  4. http://deadspin.com/5924224/baseball-writers-of-america-its-hot Don't usually like deadspin, but I snickered at this. (I guess I like Baseball writers less)
  5. bmfc1 wrote: We keep seeing the commercial with the players saying that they're into the game. Sure. I hate to think that this screwing around will hurt the Mets chances of home field advantage in the WS. Don't worry, the AL voted in Jeter to start.
  6. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Not a relief pitcher but Mets looking at C Ramon Hernandez of the Rockies, Internets say. Rockies like Turner. I'd make that deal yesterday! (looks up numbers, sees Hernandez on DL with .260 OBP, reconsiders entusiasm) really small sample size ( of course, throw in that it's COORS FIELD and the drop off looks even worse. He _is_ 36..) so seems likea good buy low guy. Still just a rumor though, and that it originated with someone like Sherman makes it even more skeptical.

Probably ups his versatility (trade!) and personally I think he's a much better outfielder than infielder.
  8. bmfc1 wrote: If the All-Star game is so important that it settles home field advantage for the WS, and Commissioner Bud has said that he wants everybody to play, then Desmond should be playing unless he's on the DL. It's nonsense that he can play every inning since April 20 but can't play 2 innings in a game that "counts." He didn't even bother to announce it after today's game ("uh-oh, I aggravated my thingy.") If Selig doesn't fine Desmond or the Nationals, then he's even more of a ball-less, incompetent, stooge than I thought and I consider him to be on a par with Bowie Kuhn. he better fine them. It's the only weapon he has to try to make teams do what he wants. (since he didn't bother trying to get a harder All Star rule into the CBA anyway) Hell, use him as a pinch hitter. i can practically guarantee that Desmond is going to take swings at a batting cage somewhere between today and Friday anyway.
  9. Big game today guys, I want all these All-Star Break stories and playoff break downs to have the NYM on them.
  10. Strasburg and Cain can start next year, or 10 years from now. Their stories will be the same (likely). This could be R.A. Dickey's only shot at being the starter, even if he's great the next couple of years. It's all (imo) about baseball stories and Dickey's is just more fun.
  11. bmfc1 wrote: Nieuwenhuis needs to go back to AAA to play everyday and try to cut down on his Adam Dunn-like strikeout numbers. Bay's return sets this up and could possibly help the team against LHP. Bay had a 900+ OPS against lefties last year. I think the concussion and multiple injuries are the perfect reason to slide him into something closer approximating a platoon role. of course.. I know we love what Hairston has done, but Terry has been using him too much against righties too. Bay's probably/maybe/could be better than that, although maybe you give Torres a couple of those starts. Tejada Turner Wright Hairston Davis Bay Torres Thole Dickey is probably pretty good against lefties. alternating in Murphy and Duda (and probably Nickeas) into that sometime.
  12. maybe someone named it something hard to search like Savannahrama?

  15. Frayed Knot wrote: And now Harper replaces Stanton on the NL AS Squad. At least Stanton has an excuse. But the Nats - at least Davey anyway - publicly stated that they preferred Harper skip the ASG so the Desmond pull out is probably more on the player than the team. I assume they're both going to fly to KC anyway. Everyone always does (except Jeter/Rivera). Is it really that hard to privately tell La Russa "Hey, dude, my chest hurts and I want to rest. Don't feel like you need to get everyone in the game and just let me chill and tweet and whatnot"
  16. Zvon wrote: I always thought the team name was Metropolitans and they just shortened it to Mets for convenience. Gary says that the team was never called the Metropolitans and that that was just the name of the company that founded the team. I knew that too (The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club), but I did think that Metropolitans was the teams full name. Very interesting. Ty Gary. Lots of random tidbits on tonight's game. I enjoyed the part where Keith was talking about the ways he had Strawberry feed him location from the on-deck circle. Also Keith raved about the way Ike was playing the bunt and rushing in and pretty much psyched the pitcher into pulling back and taking a strike.

Frayed Knot wrote: Boston fans can bitch about Bobby all they want (I don't actually know if they still are) but when their starting pitchers give up 5, 4, & 3 runs in the 1st inning to the Yanx in the first three games of their series, what's he supposed to do about it? Then tack on the fact that I don't even recognize the names of half their starting players and it doesn't say much for them on the offensive side of things either. Please can someone catch the stupid aging Yankees? Are we really going to let them coast to another division championship? I thought that division was supposed to be tough?

  20. Swan Swan H wrote: If only someone had warned us about the dangers of playing Turner at first base..... that didn't really cost us anything though, excepting the one out that they got out of that inning anyway.
  21. this got real messy real fast.
  22. on that cutoff Turner lost the out, was anyone covering first? Cedeno was just hanging out near second, Santana presumably was backing up the plate..Turner cut it off.. Not that the runner looked like he was going to about face if Turner flipped it to Tejada, but..
  23. good to keep it to 1 early, hopefully that means Santana will correct via the 'ole "Get the Ace early" mantra and give up no more.
  24. Lots of stuff going on. The Red Sox try to climb back into that division by promptly giving up 4 runs to those stupid people from the Bronx. no score Phillies/Braves in which I guess we want Phillies to win 2/3? or sweep? Rockies up 1-0 on Nats.
