  1. To some degree. maybe Gee, but he has had some good starts this year and his one before this one wasn't bad. Really a decent offense could've won most of his starts this year, since he gave up 4 a couple of times. Short outings still, but you don't usually remedy that with new callups. Marcum only has 14 or so innings so far. They've been bad, true, but he's a better pitcher than that. And John Niese had a 3.31 ERA before the last two starts. In those six starts he had one bad one that they won in a blowout, and another that he labored through 2.1 and taxed the bullpen in that they eventually lost. (ND for Niese) I'm not buying that these are samples you suddenly demote or release a guy off of. I'm all for giving guys that are performing shots, and if that means displacing someone that may just be slumping, then fine, but that doesn't appear to be the case right now. If I had to roll the dice for a starter, I'm probably taking my chances with these guys over the other options right now. The caveat here of course is that Warthen and Collins may know more than is obvious from the stat sheet. fatigue or soreness, issues with arm slots and all that. If they've got evidence that the Jon Niese that they're throwing out there isn't really the real Jon Niese, then by all means slide someone else in.
  2. It's alright, because Rivera will do his best to get out of it anyway.
  3. Well, at least they can boo him mercilessly.
  4. I think it's hard to argue anybody goes out when the three guys all have significant samples that suggest they're better than this. Isn't the chance that they turn it around more consistently higher than picking someone to replace them? I'm all for Collin McHugh getting another chance, but it's not like he's shone in his opportunities.
  5. I'm more pissed that Collins wasted it in the blowout. Lead him off the next day and then pinch run with Lagares. Boom, Pirates spotting us the leadoff guy. Take that advantage. The Pirates adherence to the stupid retaliation practice is the real problem here. Get over it and stop throwing 90 mph projectiles at human beings with the intention to hurt them. If only there were some sort of competitive game they could play to work out their differences.

  7. It's deadspin's style, so whatever, but Milledge was a super-phenom and Lagares is a part time outfielder after 2 weeks? Shot at Collins for not winning. Joke about Wheeler getting called up. Inferring other teams would've released Valdespin and then calling him one of the Mets best hitters (neither is true) nor is Hawkins their best setup man.
  8. That's a great troll post by deadspin. *rolls eyes*
  9. Edgy MD wrote: Right clavicle? That's too close to the Johan zone for my comfort. I'll not sleep well tonight. well, we should hear today. Sounds like no big deal if it is indeed the clavicle, but you're right, pitchers are often just guessing where the pain is and if they're off slightly..

Terry's biggest crime in this whole deal was not phrasing himself very well. Fighting the fans is ALWAYS a losing proposition (calling Lee Elia) and just the fact that he made it appear that that's what he's doing puts him in a bad light even if by "fans" he meant: all you folks out there who think you know everything that goes on here. yeah. pretty much. Even though it was really just a "We're taking care of it" type response, he probably should've phrased it more like that. Although I guess he has in the past. Probably tires of repeating himself. Someone tweeted that John Ricco was on WFAN or something. That guy really is the canary of organizational changes isn't he? Makes me nervous.
  11. the only real interaction Terry has with the 'fans' is what the media tells him we're supposedly thinking. But there a vast majority of us that wish people would stfu about Jordany Valdespin. The media has decided that Terry is a lame duck. I could've written you this script in February. Jordany was such an obvious choice for focal point of a losing the clubhouse argument too. It's only a matter of time until we get in depth articles (I'm sure Rubin has already done this) about how Backman is succeeding with the 51s. Carig is wrong. Plenty of people keep 'problem children' around in the majors and it means nothing. What Collins means is that a handful of reports in the paper about Valdespin does not mean he's a clubhouse problem that they can't handle. If he wasn't manageable, they WOULD demote him. The Mets have plenty of outfielders in the system that can't get on base to replace him with. Valdespin is just a pawn in a bigger discussion. And we discussed it here in the offseason too. The Mets are being secretive, with good cause, about where they're going in the future and when, particularly with regards to Collins. We're getting close to the point where someone is going to leak "Collins has never been the long term answer. The Mets already know that they're going in a different direction in 2014, the year the front office has long targeted as the time to start investing in the team. (possibly insert Backman here). The only question is if Terry Collins plays out the season or if they promote/bring in the new guy to get a taste of the team before next year. (insert Backman promoted with Wheeler allusions here)"
  12. Pedro Feliciano (Edit, fine, drafted by the Dodgers. wutevs)
  13. metsmarathon wrote: quick, before i'm done looking up hte answer. name the 11 pitchers the mets have drafted in the last 30 years that have more wins as mets than matt harvey (7). no cheating if you've already looked it up as a result of the discussion in the harvey thread. Parnell, Heilman, Gee.
  14. Might just be Taxi'ing, but I love that he scooped the beat writers by posting an Instagram picture of himself at Busch Stadium.
  15. Family friend of the wife lives in..what I guess is Summerlin judging by the map. It's a nice enough place I guess. easy forget you're near Vegas and not just in a random planned dessert community. It's quite and peaceful. They have a Trader Joe's. I've heard bad things about the stadium in Vegas so I guess this makes sense. out in teh desert fits better with the 51s theme anyway. Really should've been the 21s in Vegas with a mascot called Blackjack.

John Olerud is the only Met to walk more than 100 times in a season (125 in 1999). http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/6035/david-wright And Duda projects to 110. It'd be nice if someone could drive these two guys in once in a while.
  17. metirish wrote: I had to let this sink in Matt Harvey has won seven games in his young Mets career. This should tell you how bad New York has been at drafting and developing pitchers: Harvey already ranks 12th in wins for the Mets among the 766 pitchers they drafted in the past 30 years. damn damning, but could I get some context? I mean, 766 includes a lot of scrub long-shot 20th rounders no? Where to other teams stand? pick a sophmore from the Braves or the Cardinals over the last 30 years. Are they 12th in team wins? I'd be surprised if they're lower than 40-50. developing pitching prospects is hard.
  18. Toby Hyde on Valdespin last February Defensively, after mostly playing secondbase for various Mets affiliates since 2007, the Valdespin spent more time working at short (98 games) than at second (32 games) in 2011. I still have not met a scout who thought Valdespin could play shortstop everyday in the majors. The concerns vary from arm, hands to consistency. Valdespin committed 32 errors at short in 2011, or just about one every three games. So, hes a second baseman who can play short in a pinch.
  19. Do you post everything he writes here?
  20. metirish wrote: I was going to ask if Valdaspin ever played SS, and sure enough he did a lot in the minor leagues http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=valdes001jor let's do it..... yes, and badly. Tejada's a better SS, a better hitter, and probably has more upside. Murphy too. why would we play Jordany?
  21. "...or as bad as you look when you're losing." One of these days the Mets will win another game. No time like the present.
  22. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: If this is the calm before the storm, then the worse our actual record is-- as opposed to how the team plays, on the whole-- the better, right? (All the better to stoke the lower-reaches of the system, no?) Let's go, all Mets except the bullpen! yes, we know all weather forecasters are always wrong. The storm may be tentatively expected next year, but it could also show up tomorrow or miss us entirely. Or end up just a drizzle instead of the hurricane that's predicted.

And even Seaver, in '67, wasn't as good as Harvey is right now. Coming into this season I was hoping it would be a 1983 kind of year. Instead it's smelling more like 1979. I'm coming to believe 2013 is on the verge of establishing its own discernible, meaningful precedent, as in "oy, it's another 2013 this year!" Calm before the storm. Each year is it's own year. Fun to compare in the offseason drudgery, but really unrelated to any other in any meaningful way.
  24. Benjamin Grimm wrote: This one's not likely to do any harm, though, unless Ankiel takes playing time away from someone more deserving, but the Mets don't seem to have that kind of someone. Not going to find out like this. Lagares has like 4 AB. And the guy sent down, Brown, didn't have much more. Kirk Nieuwenhuis had 16 or so and strikes out less.
