Addy Rubey wrote: NEW YORK -- Terry Collins told the Daily News that team brass has had informal conversations about moving Travis d'Arnaud to left field, although the manager noted that it was just casual conversation and not some plan. The aim would be to keep dArnaud healthy and avoiding concussions while keeping his bat in the lineup. But as of right now we havent even approached [left field] as an option, because it would have to be go to the instructional league, Collins told the newspaper. I don't know why Collins is opening his mouth, but sure, have a conversation about the best way to maximize assets and health, I'm all for that.
  2. Edgy MD wrote: Well, it may be too late to matter, but the bat still plays better at second than in left. Honestly I'm surprised Eric Young didn't get traded. He's a perfect 25th man on a playoff roster for pinch-running duties.

So I look, and I look. And then I take a closer look and I see that the dWAR portion of his WAR is off the charts. Not Brooks Robinson off the charts, but amazing for Wright. Go figger. dWAR is iffy imo, not that I don't think he had a great year defensively, but.. still, 15th in wRC+ which isn't defense, though is Citi Field adjusted. But then, he was 13th in unadjusted OPS, so.. And last year was even better, he was just hurt. That's a different issue of course. His health and ability to play 140+ games. Maybe if this was a more competitive year he would've just DL'd and gotten better. and just played 130 games. Maybe if the Mets had someone to actually play at least as well as a hurt David Wright...

(bold italics added) But 2013 wasn't a full season. Wright didn't even play enough to qualify for the batting title. He played 112 games. He missed 50 games. Granted, some of his rate stats were superb ... but the league's best players also have 150, 200 and even more PA's than Wright did. sorry, that was 2012. I mistyped.

  6. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I wouldn't be surprised at all if it turns out that Wright's problem is some nagging injury that would resolve itself if only he were DL'd, but that the FO would rather part with their grandkids than have attendance drop some more, which is what the FO worries will happen if Wright is DL'd. But who knows? It could be anything. He's getting older no matter what. And truth be told, the last time Wright was a superstar was seven seasons ago. So that's a lot of decline right there. Well we KNOW he has multiple nagging injuries. We KNOW he's been a superstar the last two seasons (though missed some time last year). So it's hardly a jump to think the injuries are sapping him some this year. Also, he's been ailing MORE in August and we're looking at his season at the end of a couple of weeks of struggling and slumping, whatever the cause. The numbers are better going into August and they might be better coming out of September depending.

  8. Don't think this one's here already (title isn't very searchable). Fancy cast Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo Woody Harrelson , Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine.. 4 street-magician/con-artists/illusionist get together for a group act where they rob banks as part of audition for a magical secret society and the FBI try to pin them down all the while. Not the greatest movie or anything, but it was a fun adventure in illusion and trickery. Typical thriller/heist type movie. Good cast and witty dialogue. Was an enjoyable ride.

  11. Still space in that other sport that i have a league in just for the sake of pretending I'm interested. https://yho.com/nfl?l=399458&k=281e9fa0d529dbd8 also this silly one that I made with weirder scoring rules just to be a contrarian. https://yho.com/nfl?l=399388&k=1ccfd7c82684074c

  13. Edgy MD wrote: Sorry, I'm not sure what I said wrong here. I understood that you were arguing that the union would not allow cessation of the DH. I understand and agree and was suggesting the union should re-examine that position. I'm not making a lot of friends this evening. I've moved along to the "just do it and give us the DH all over" camp, but I do think it elevates salaries. Hard to measure though because it's so circumstantial. Take the Tigers a few years ago when they got Prince Fielder. They probably don't do that without the DH to rotate goes into. So that would take them out of the running and theoretically one less team bidding for his services means he'd end up making less money. I suspect guys like Jason Giambi, or Alex Rodriguez, get an extra year, or a couple extra million, at the end of their contracts knowing you can sorta milk a little more value out of them by not playing them in the field. But there are so many moving parts and interleague trades and different markets that I don't think it's easy to just say "AL has higher contracts" or anything.

  16. Lefty Specialist wrote: One or two bats won't be enough. This team has across the board deficiencies in situational hitting. It hasn't had a real lead off hitter since 2011. It has no power, very little speed and poor game management. This team is only less than 20 games under .500 by virtue of its pitching. The hitting is atrocious and won't be better next year without a Roto-rostering. nah. Lagares, if he can walk a little more, is adding enough defense. Granderson's had a crappy August after a crappy April, but that's small stuff. Duda is very good. d'Arnaud showing signs of being very good. Wright's been banged up all year but it's not like he's bad. Murphy's good. So what's that leave? SS and LF. even just one is fine. Find a SS that won't embarrass you and you can even platoon it together in LF with Nieuwenhuis, Brown, Puello, den Dekker, random veteran retreads. The problem lately is that Flores and den Dekker haven't shown they're major leaguers, and the Mets pitchers pretend that it's not their job to hit so you literally only have 2/3rds a lineup and if any of that slumps (which it is right now) they don't score. It's not that there are wholesale problems. Really, a LFer that could hit 20 home runs and play decent defense would go a long long way. (hey, a guy like Chris Young a couple of years ago..)
  17. play den Dekker and Flores and pinch hit Niese, see if you score runs. gee..
  18. Edgy MD wrote: In a more just world, where the AAA Mets are still in Buffalo or Norfolk, Matsuzaka would be flying in for this start fresh as a daisy. Anyhow, all blessings to Colon and his family. Sorry if I triggered something in his fate. ditto. Probably doesn't really matter though, can grab Dice-K to fill in the Torres role in the meantime, only missing out today.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: It's the nature of playoffs that --- more or less by design --- they give lesser-record teams a chance to steal better-record teams' bacon. well yeah. If they designed it so the best team won 90% of the time, where would the drama and intrigue come from? The only thing I really dislike about the MLB playoffs is all the off time that allows a different roster construction than the regular season. I don't like teams being to fly with just 3 starting pitchers sometimes.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: I could think of worse ideas. I want Bartolo Colon to leadoff and play SS.
  21. I want Wright to leadoff.
  22. needs clear and concise guidelines and rules of enforcement, and public ones. None of this umpire discretion stuff. (like balks and checked swings)
  23. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Ceetar wrote: yeah, I think the Mets really need (at least) one more talented hitter. I wonder if David Wright will be available this offseason. that would certainly help wouldn't it? (Though he hasn't been a problem, just not quite a solution either)
  24. I kinda suspect Collins still wishes he could play Abreu.
