  1. Personally I would've taken that 20 million to Cabrera and tossed it on top of the Zobrist deal to swing him. I don't get why you guys seem to think they mishandled the Zobrist deal. I know some of you don't think he was a good signing, but let's assume the Mets did want him over Walker given the opportunity, and approach it from that angle. Popular reports are that he chose Cubs based on a non-money desire to be a part of it. So acting all aloof and "we don't need you, we might get Walker" doesn't seem like the way to woo him. Hence the taking him out to Connecticut, talking about batting him second and giving him second and all that.

OTOH, playing for a new contract, not a longterm committment. Muffy & Niese gone! They were longtime sufferers. were they 2nd and 3rd behind Wright in tenure? Parnell may have been ahead of Niese? I forget. I don't hate this trade. It'll do. Walker's fine, better than fine perhaps though seemed a little power-sapped last year.
  3. Kristie Ackert @Ackert_NYDN #Mets source called to clarify. "definitely in the works, not close to being done".....I Apologize for any confusion. 3:04 PM - 9 Dec 2015 From my point earlier, why is a Mets source calling in to clarify anything while negotiations are going on? Negotiate first, talk about it after the fact. I think I'm okay, with the way the media is, with them clarifying when rumors of 'done deal' get ahead of the negotiations. Don't want to make Flores cry again.

Angst is a boundless font of life energy that can keep you warm in the cold days of December. I generally use beer for this, and don't generally find myself cold. I've got enough angst with my own finances.

  7. d'Kong76 wrote: Ceetar wrote: I don't care how many steps they take in the offseason That is abundantly clear. Surround these pitchers with some offense, Sterlingpon... you're on the clock and it's ticking loudly before they all start evaporating elsewhere. Not really how it works. I'm sure everyone will hate and bash whatever guys they do get as the 'wrong guys' unless they take the top 3 free agent hitters and even then it'll be the wrong top 3.
  8. d'Kong76 wrote: I take no solace in being NL Champs if it was three steps forward in 2015 and two-and-a-half steps back in 2015-16 offseason. I don't care how many steps they take in the offseason, it's neither forward or back as there are no games.
  9. Because mostly all owners suck and I literally don't care about any of them. My team went to the World Series, and are, even right this moment, probably even money to win the division again. I'm happy. who said Heyward is out of our reach anyway? I'm not the one pretending I know every ledger line on the Mets, and Sterlings, books.
  10. d'Kong76 wrote: Of course, they wouldn't have gotten there without Cespedes and perhaps not have been as successful in the playoffs without Murphy.. both of whom are now gone and replacements don't seem to be on the paydar. I didn't see the link that said the Mets were considering 8 fielders. Is Flores going to try to field both second and SS?
  11. pass. He's not actually good, though he has his moments, and I don't want to sign a guy just because he's fun. He's also a year older. There must be someone else we can grab to eat some innings if not just go internal, though I like the depth of having another veteran guy.
  12. of course, the Mets have been the WS as much as, or more than, all those teams except the Giants in recent years.
  13. The Matz one has a former Met dominating the Yankees. bonus points.
  14. Benjamin Grimm wrote: In our preseason prediction threads, there are some people here who always pick the Mets to win 100 games and the pennant. But other than them, I think the consensus here was that they were mediocre, with an outside chance at the playoffs. I know that's how I felt. Yes, but most of that was because many thought the Nationals would win 95.

It may be fair, but it's certainly debatable. I don't think Gwreck's point is reasonably debatable. So we knew in 2015 that d'Arnaud and Wright would miss all that time? Cause hell, a full season from them is worth well more than what Cespedes (And even the scraps Kelly and Juan added)
  16. He's probably better than Flores, if similar. low OBP with some pop. Probably better defensively. But Flores is young and can get better and I'm not sure the marginal upgrade is worth paying for. even less so at second.
  17. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Jon Heyman wrote: folks in lobby are suggesting 10-yr deal for jason heyward is very possible #cubs #cardinals #giants #angels #mystery team "folks in lobby"? Fuck, if that's gonna start being a source I'm going down to Nashville (or is it DC next year?) and just make up crap in the lobby.
  18. Depends if you think Upton's on the decline I guess. Personally I don't think so, but it's not like I'm super enthused about Upton over Heyward, but if it's for a shorter deal and we're only talking corner? probably. Heyward had some batted ball luck last year and was still not as good as Upton's worst year in 4 and Jason's best year was his rookie year so technically everything is decline since then. His K rates have dropped, but may have leveled out the last two yaers Maybe Petco is suppressing offense more than these park-adjusted stats account for?
  19. I tend to agree that Zobrist was a better fit than Heyward, particularly because the primary deficit we're talking about is offense. Heyward just doesn't seem worth what he's going to get. I'd rather Justin Upton, who's a much better hitter, as long as we're talking outfielders. But seeming like Fowler is the best fit for the Mets of those three outfielders.
  20. The front office would get just as much flak for not speaking enough. And that way gives the media fewer quotes/posts so they'd be less happy with them. People are going to over-analyze every quote or non-quote so they really shouldn't put too much worry into if they're talking too much or too little. Maybe that unsubstantiated 4/80 rumor was the agent/Zobrist leaking "Hey, this is what it would take for me to not go to the Cubs" Personally, I think the Mets should've done that if they felt Zobrist was the guy that helps the team (And I do think he's that) I get it's all a game of probabilities but if they felt Zobrist gave the highest probability of postseason return, that extra couple of % is worth the extra money.
  21. Disappointed. Zobrist is really good. Wonder if this means Murphy comes back.
  22. Gwreck wrote: I think it's also key to remember as well that the Mets don't need to envision Heyward as a long-term centerfielder if they sign him; they need him to play there regularly for 2 years. When Granderson's contract is up, he can move back to right field. Then they'd have to replace him in center, while downgrading offense in right. That's not the ideal situation.
  23. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Ceetar wrote: market value continually goes up. (and one could argue, rightly) if 4/80 is market value for Ben Zobrist, than it is. Looks like it's not, but if Zobrist is the best fit, the Mets should pay whatever it takes to get him. I was thinking the same thing. Maybe that's today's fair market value, and not just another garishly overpriced contract (offer) that Met fans can easily dismiss. There's a little bit of chicken/egg of course. But whatever, players are getting a historic low percentage of baseball's revenue.
  24. d'Kong76 wrote: Can Sterlingpon Play Payward? probably.
  25. For Heyward to _really_ be worth the Mets going after him, he'd probably have to play center. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jason-heyward-as-a-center-fielder/ August Fagerstrom suggests we shouldn't worry about it, he'd probably still be good there.
