  1. one of my coworkers has a second-hand story about Jeter running around a hotel snorting coke with a bunch of women.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: I've been paying very little attention to the puns, and give them very little weight. (I agree that very few of them are clever.) I judge them as visual works of art. And some of the covers are, visually, very appealing. From today's poll (1.4.6) I think the ROYAL PAIN cover from the Post worked very well. Those broadsheets, like the image above, are an entirely different animal. I like the puns, The puns are the only thing that even gets me to look at the cover. for me it's 1. Good pun 2. Non-incendiary blurb 3. quality and related picture. But clearly what I'm looking for and what they're trying to do is different. I find the inclusion of the pun and blurb to often dominate the visual aesthetic anyway, so if it's bad, I often move on.
  3. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: That's a broadsheet, not a tabloid. Traditionally the latter more reliant on photographs, shorter, punchier stories, and take advantage of their smaller size providing 2 covers with the "back" devoted to sports. They typically are also more local in scope and aimed primarily at mass-market working-class folks who read them on trains, and supported by local advertisers like car dealerships and other retailers. aha. Didn't know their was a difference. local paper is local paper to me. I guess NJ doesn't have 'tabloids' then? I don't know the financials of the Record or say the Star-Ledger, but I think they're pretty local. But I guess they're less trashy and sensationalist.. So it's literally the sports talk radio equivalent of news. no wonder I've always found them beneath a level of common decency. Maybe I shouldn't have been voting on these polls so objectively. If I'd approached with a "Which would I use as the cover for that day's WFAN talk segments" I would've voted differently.
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I don't know. I've never lived in New Jersey and I don't know what those papers look like. I did look for similar covers for the Mets playoff opponents, and couldn't find anything in Los Angeles or Kansas City, but did find some covers from the Chicago Sun Times. Connecticut too probably occasionally, particularly during World Series, has sports covers too. I briefly looked for Star-Ledger/Record back covers online but can never find them. I couldn't tell you either, I'm not in places that display newspapers prominently. I think the bagel shop has one of them but I wouldn't swear to it.
  5. do other papers not do this stuff on covers? Bergen Record, etc?
  6. I'm having fun with it, but also a little dismayed. I think 90% of these absolutely suck. Another "If I had the time" projects, I'd love to next year mock up a cover for every game with my own pun/photo/etc and see how I did.
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: I wonder if they could incentive it differently too. "Hey, sign this 1 million dollar contract with a 2 million "if you make 10 appearances" clause. No, because the team must offer him at least 80% of what he was due to make this past year: 80% of $2.595 = $2.076 Now that'll get cut essentially in half due to him missing half the season but the rate at which they pay him can't go any lower. To offer anything less than that in base pay they'd have to let him become a FA and then re-sign him, but then of course he'd be open to other teams' deals as well. I wasn't sure if those rules only applied to actual arbitration or if they could agree to whatever they wanted.
  8. I wonder what the incentive is for Mejia here, to just take whatever crap the Mets offer? I mean, They could offer him the same 2.6 mill he had last year, of which they'd only really have to pay like a million of. It's basically nothing. Even if they went to arb, he's not getting much more than that. I wonder if they could incentive it differently too. "Hey, sign this 1 million dollar contract with a 2 million "if you make 10 appearances" clause.
  9. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Ceetar/ Those FanGraphs guys are just making this stuff up. /Ceetar Srsly, I like Dan, although secrets don;t tend to last long in baseball as Keith likes to remind us. I've actually linked this article here before. But hey, maybe I'm biased because I like Eno. I'm not calling for Warthen to be fired anymore, but I still don't like him and think the Mets could do better.(I don't think they necessarily would if they'd have fired him years ago either though) My complaints were never that he was useless though. He was supposedly influential in Dickey's knuckleballs changing speeds too. I just think he seems poor in getting pitchers prepared, particularly to start the season, and guys that don't fit in (i.e. don't really feel comfortable throwing a slider) aren't helped out as much as they could be. Either way, having this set of pitchers to work with certainly helps.
  10. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Mets sign RHP reliever Stolmy Pimentel to a minor league deal and invite him to Spring Training. Once was a prospect, now a fringey middle reliever with cuppas with the Pirates and Rangers last year. Still just 25. If i had free time, I'd so go back to last offseason and retweet everyone that made this joke with "Whew, I'm glad I printed them!"
  11. Frayed Knot wrote: If Seattle swallowed half the money I'd think about it ... and then I'd say no. Did you see what former Seattle hitting coach Andy Van Slyke had to say about Cano recently? Worst #3 hitter in baseball; sucked on 'D'; doesn't hustle; was essentially responsible for the manager and coaches getting fired, etc. Maybe a bit of post-job anger from AVS -- who, to be fair, is not a guy who has to worry about his acceptance speech to MENSA -- but it's been a long time since I heard a prominent player taken apart like that. This would be the same interview Van Slyke said Kershaw wants Puig off the team. Personally, I'd want them both. (Puig and Cano that is) Cano is great. He struggled with some on and off field issues early last season leading him to play a low 156 games for the first time since 2007, but he hit like Cano in the second half. Of course, his contract is ridiculous. I don't know if there's a reasonable deal there. He's signed for 8 more seasons, through his age 40 season. That's too much. Even if the NL DOES get the DH by then, there's just too much risk for having a second baseman from ages 33-40. Can we rent him for 4 years and then give him back?
  12. Fman99 wrote: Ugh with the innings limit non-story nonsense. I find "stories" of this sort to be the worst part of sports coverage. Just play fucking baseball. yeah, I didn't vote for any of those because to me this is a poll about Mets covers, and those are covers about a lawyer. I liked Inside Edition, mostly for the timely photo.
  13. oh look, ANOTHER Daniel Boon cover. That's pretty much mailing it in. The last few are disqualified in my eyes since they're not wearing Mets uniforms. I like Mets Express. The picture really suggests speed (With dirt flying too!) and that meshes well with the title. I like when they tie it together like that rather than throw out a tired fat or old joke.
  14. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Why do you say that the Mets would probably be limited to receiving prospects for Harvey? Because I think most trades end up being like that, especially in the offseason when there are free agent answers as well. A Harvey for Tulowitski swap might be interesting though. These are the ones that I'd be more willing to do, I just think it becomes so much tougher to actually pull off because there are a lot more no-trade clauses and the union/agents are more involved, etc.

I hate trading established stars for even high-upside prospects. risky. At least with 3 years of control left. Maybe next season, or if the Mets aren't in the hunt at the deadline in 2017. What if it's, say, a close-to-fully-cooked someone like Addison Russell, or Byron Buxton? I dunno, I think I might be more skeptical of guys that weren't impressive in their first taste of the majors. Granted they're young, but that last step is the hardest. I mean, you're talking a top 10 NL pitcher here. You're only really hoping Buxton or Russell could approach that, and that's not worth a couple of years of control. Throw someone else in.
  16. d'Kong76 wrote: There's been a few things written about it but that drum didn't beat very long. Most sensible people are saying he goes to ar- bitration and gets six-or-so-million-dollar-one-year deal. Wasn't there a really long stretch where the Mets were like one of the very few teams that managed to avoid arbitration with players or am I think of something else? Still, I think this thread will surface from time to time over the winter and throughout 2016. they had a streak going yes. In truth, few players actually hit arbitration. The estimated salaries are so predictable that in most cases teams settle somewhere close to that.

  18. Matz all the way. Shining Star is boring, plus I like how the Yankees is only barely present on the Matz one, like "Oh, right, we should probably stick them on there somewhere"
  19. Actually liked two today. YOYOYO and Wright off the bat.

I think you've already amply demonstrated your superior attitude in regard to these covers. The only redeemable part of these papers is mocking their covers, and you're teeing them up for me. I just demand more from my humor.
  22. And wants to be a Met for Life. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/syndergaard-loves-ny-met-life-article-1.2441230 SIGN HIM TO AN EXTENSION NOW SANDY!!!!! I love that he buys into the Thor moniker 100% and enjoys quirky fun. Changing his Twitter background to lightning over LA/Chicago/Kansas City was cool. Proclaming Terry Collins Manager of the year in Asgard. going around to all the other NY teams and taking pictures in the center of the rink/court/endzone?
