If we can hang onto deG-Syn-Whee-Gs, plus FlexMan and whomever else (Free Agent X) we could prolly survive his loss, and even given his availability issues, that WS start, lefthandedness, contract status and stuff oughta intrigue someone. I'm attached to Matz. I want him to become the best Met ever. His debut was my daughter's first game, so it'd be cool if that still meant something when she's old enough to understand what that means. I should probably get her first game certificate signed by him regardless though. I'm wondering if I should just mail it to Citi Field as the best route though.
  6. They went to the playoffs twice, the World Series once. They legitimately were a few breaks from a championship. It's in no way comparable to Generation K. There is no woe is me here. The Mets are fine. Things could still continue to go pear shaped, but they could also go..pancake shaped? ship shaped? They could still be great, but even if they're not they're lightyears better than what those guys did.
  7. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Starting to get the Generation K kinda feeling here. Stephen Matz, by himself, has started more World Series games than Generation K combined in their career.

(Of course, some people questioned the ability needed to manage a team of All-Stars with management hell-bent on winning with an unlimited budget.) Then there's the other former Mets third baseman who went straight to managing and was not quite as successful. Bobby Valentine's comments about that at the Queens Baseball event were funny.) I don't recall Bobby's comments on Ventura. I can't do Bobby V justice, and I only heard the audio. But it was along the lines of, "Of all the guys on that team I thought could be managers someday, Robin? Seriously?" He wasn't saying he didn't have the ability, but talked about his role in the fake mustache incident and a seeming fondness for breaking the rules. Find the podcast of Bobby speaking that day. It's worth it. I was there (And filmed it, though the card was full) just was drawing a blank, yeah. That was it. More incredulity than anything else.

  10. you should update a google sheet with these or something, so it's easy to tabulate the results. who won the Firsts! ?
  11. Frayed Knot wrote: Sideline reporters are, IMO, virtually always irrelevant so I don't hang that particular fault on Rosenthal. It's more the fault of the ingrained thinking that convinces networks they're required to have one. The bigger story is the idiocy of having the guy who probably breaks more national baseball stories than anyone and his employer decides, right as they're heading into deadline season, to take his main format away. It wouldn't surprise me if you get very little pageviews/clicks on the few minutes of early news on a trade versus the yelling (or in a more sane world, discussion) about it 20 minutes later.
  12. Heard someone suggest an Augmentative Reality ump instead, which is a really cool idea. He'd literally be able to see the floating strike zone.
  13. Fman99 wrote: And now we have to wait until Friday, not Thursday, for baseball to resume. The extending of the ASG break by a full day also gets me all cheesed up. The season will be 4 days longer next year, so even more off-days.
  14. Wilmer Flores is a bit like a turtle right? a mutant ninja one?
  15. Aaron Judge's BABIP is .426. Only Cobb and Joe Jackson in 1911 had higher qualifying marks, at .444 and .433 There are plenty of recent examples of guys having high (not that high) BABIP marks, but there's still a measure of luck in there. It won't stay that high, his stats won't double from what they are now (what they were at halfway anyway). The total league average BABIP is .299. And this doesn't include his home runs or walks, obviously, so it's an even smaller sample size. It'll go down. And yes, he hits the ball hard, but there's still some measure of luck involved in the flyball to home run conversion rate. Judge is tied at 141st in doubles. Game of inches and all. If he's even fractionally later, or off, on the ball more of those home runs stay in the park, and some of them are caught.
  16. I have like, no chance, but jcl is pulling away from me so maybe Asdrubal was BTF3?

Every once in a while you get a day where they seem to go right over head, or at least right over the outfield. It doesn't seem like they're flying right over Shea anymore either though. Perhaps volume, newer tech, and security has altered the flight paths some.
  20. Home Alone - Flores
  21. it's only been half a season and he's a 25 year old rookie, it's not like he's a phenom. Plenty of time for the league to figure him out and him become an Adam Dunn type. Yankees are working on teh collapse thing.
  22. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: We watched last night. New format is much better, but it's just batting practice. Agreed on Judge's oppo-shots. They looked like they came off only a fraction of the bat. Juicy ball. better pitcher too. Sano's guy was practically brushing him back at some point. No Berman but the ESPN broadcast was typically horrible and poorly produced. Split screens everywhere, ignoring everyone except Judge, missing home runs, cut-away during the time outs so they could get another ad in, etc.
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: I haven't taken a look at what Minny's rotation looks like these days, but it's possible the Twins gave him a better shot of starting a few games as opposed to what Sandy would promise him. and in contention and he doesn't have to bat.
  24. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Would this joint take the place of McFaddens? Agree with those who say the food/atmosphere/positioning there is a complete swing-and-miss when it shouldn't have been. The era of the Irish Pub+Grill ended about a decade ago, even for sports fans. Irish pub and grill is like one step up from 'dive bar' and they're all dying because they were all mostly garbage. The ones that aren't have a healthy football watching crowd I think. no, it's going into the Metropolitan Hospitality office space between the RF gate and Amway/CF gate. They'll be fine though, as I said, they're using the brewery to support their existing network. Currently the Citi Field beers are brewed in San Diego. Now they'll be local. The same with all the other Mikkeller brews around. Supposedly his Evil Twin brother is opening something in Brooklyn.
  25. if we're being honest the Mets should probably trade FOR a top-flight pitcher and sign a defense-first CF and 2B.
