You want the action?” “All right, all right. Gimme a hundred on the Metropolitans.” —The Deuce pilot, 9/10/2017, James Franco as Frankie, laying action in Times Square, 1971 (Tug didn't start a game at Cincinnati in 1971, but that doesn't seem to be what the new HBO series is about.) It seems, uh, very much about Tugs.
  3. meh. we know so much more about stuff now than 2003, and the targeting seems very specific to guys that seem like they can/will succeed within the organization.
  4. oh man, so close. I may/probably will be in Buffalo on 5/13. The Mets play the Blue Jays 5/15 but at home. boo.
  5. Frayed Knot wrote: Let's see if they're brainless enough to schedule that first Saturday game at night. I'm sure they will. TV drives everything. AVG temp increases by about 3 degrees a week through March/April. So making the season start 2 days earlier is worth about a degree. imperceptible. Maybe a miniscule increase in snow possibility too? And in at least half the cities the temperatures are warmer than that anyway.

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Yet another media member comes out strongly for Terry. “I’ve been through nine managers since I’ve been here, and Terry Collins is by far, by far, the best to deal with.” I feel like how well the media likes him is like a manager's 100th most valuable asset in terms of the team but probably #2 in terms of job security.

  8. seawolf17 wrote: I would totally go, except it's the MFYs. Eff that. If the Rays were fighting for a playoff spot, they'd be within their rights to be upset about their competitors getting three bonus home games. I'd go except for the young kids thing. Just to offset the balance of the Yankees fans defiling the place with their filthy cheering. and also because last-minute mid-week back to school and the games are probably going to be fairly empty and it's fun to have the run of the place like that.
  9. Rays were so excited about getting to come to Citi in 2018 that they decided to come this year too. They'll play, as the home team, next week. Apparently MLB was motivated to choose this venue because it only required hotels for the Rays and not their opponents.

I want the Mets to play the Monty Python clip when/if he comes back next season. *clang* BRING OUT YOUR DEAD *clang* BRING OUT YOUR DEAD dGFXGwHsD_A
  11. there's not really any evidence to suggest he's harming himself further by playing baseball. At least not more than just generally existing. He's treating the pinched nerves and in general has been shutting it down when he's in pain and can't play even when he was active. I guess you could claim that the spinal stenosis is what caused the neck herniation, but I don't think that's been stated. And the pain this year has been a complication of that injury/surgery. Perhaps there is something in David's DNA that makes him prone to these disc/spinal type conditions. I don't remember anyone discovering a specific play or trauma that might have cause the herniation, but it just as easily could've been a workout thing. Hopefully the rotator cuff surgery is successful, and the recovery is complete. He'll still have to manage the stenosis, but he proved he could do that AND hit well. I guess that's the best case.
  12. extra 4 off days built in, per CBA. makes things a little weirder than usual. NL East makes for a few potential road trips even with the young-uns. Though already sorta planning to be in Buffalo in May and Houston/Beaumont in fall so who knows if I have the time. Toronto? Boston? July 4th week is an awkward one to get away perhaps. The Mets play in Colorado 22nd of June and then don't leave the tiem zone again until the end of August. Included within that is a three week stretch at 'home'.

  14. Benjamin Grimm wrote: While I was walking the dog this morning, I was thinking of Duquette's prediction that the Mets would be in on Eric Hosmer. I wonder if he just made that up himself, or if he based that on inside information? It would be an interesting development if they did pursue him, given that it would mean turning away from Dominic Smith at a very early point. My guess is that they'll focus their attention on an outfielder, and perhaps a second- or third-baseman. Two months until the next episode of Mets Hot Stove. It will be interesting to know which players will be discussed. As with much of Hot Stove and pre Hot Stove. You just need one "insider" to float an idea and then everyone has to talk about it because that's the rule of journalism. Mets haven't really discussed any players publicly, as they wouldn't discuss guys employed by other teams at this point, so it's all speculation.
  15. Edgy MD wrote: Town of Hempstead is this sweet little bastion of an un-necessary level of bureacracy that can go corrupt to the core for decades at a time while life generally functions workably because of its utter redundancy between the village governments below and the county above. And the extra level of bureaucracy was the death knell for the Islanders at the Coliseum! The Town of Hempstead is garbage though. Crappy employer. I was in a remote park that no one cared about and even I wasn't free from the power games. There are two types of employees, seasonal workers/grunts and overly-ambitious coattail hangers that think they're more important than they are.
  16. I might contend if you're at a vacation condo and NOT drunk and naked you're doing it wrong.
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: There's something about talk radio that favors the loudly ignorant and the fiercely corrupt. At least the ESPN guy who got busted last week for being drunk and naked in someone else's vacation condo gets to say; "Whew, I'm off the hook now" I missed that one. Small potatoes. Why was he drunk and naked in someone else's condo, or was it someone else's wife's condo?
  18. Right. The conversation needs to focus on "Did the Mets get better?" "Enough better?" "Did they build depth?" and not "did they spend as much?" This is a good benchmark for if you should read a story this winter though. If it focuses on payroll numbers and not on acquisitions, it's probably not worth reading. I mean, sure, you'd like Sandy to come out and say "We're going to be competitive, and acquire the players we feel we need to return to the playoffs. The payroll could be lower, the same, or even greater." I just find it hard to worry about all these private financial numbers I don't know about, and demand the Wilpons spent additional money beyond revenue, or projected revenue, or debt-to-income ratios, or whatever.
  19. Chad Ochoseis wrote: I didn't catch the Southhampton digs. When did Keith move from Sag Harbor? That confused me, too. According to Wikipedia, Sag Harbor is an incorporated village partially located within the Town of Southampton. Who knew? Not ever having been a Long Islander, I never got the town/village distinction they have there. But I remember my 7th grade social studies teacher noting that Oceanside, where he lived, was part of the Town of Hempstead, and I think the Town of Huntington takes up a fairly large chunk of Suffolk County, including plenty of places that wouldn't be thought of as Huntington. Town of Oyster Bay is pretty big too I think. I'm not really up on the how and why. I worked for the Town of Hempstead for a while (in the village of Elmont) and I lived in the town, in the village of Valley Stream but not THE incorporated village of Valley Stream. how's that for confusing? Like, Valley Stream was my address. that's where I lived. But we had to pay "out of town" prices for the pool or the library. (we didn't pay the village taxes) Basically I think it's a way for the villages to sorta police/run themselves in a more community-oriented way. So whereas Valley Stream had a police dept, garbage collection, and other community things, as an outsider we were plowed/policed by the Town of Hempstead. Not all villages are incorporated. Our 'local' fire dept was Elmont, but we went to Valley Stream schools.
  20. There's been a very obvious push from the Mets to be less forthcoming with information regarding their plans and injury, and it's fun how the media just doesn't even't bother to dig or push, just reports it the same way.
  21. I almost never check in mobiley. got other things to do.
  22. been to the Cyclones and the Ducks. Had intentions of seeing the Rockland Boulders or (and now no longer possible) the Bridgeport Bluefish this summer, but didn't. Spring? I lose track. it's fluid. Pirates home old Red Sox home. Tigertown PSL Marlins home Nationals home. Cardinals home.
  23. I've been to San Diego twice (I think, why do I think it's three? where is my brain) the first time in 2006 and the second yes, it was three! 2006, 2009, and 2011. (2011 feels like it was like last year, I only remember when it was by looking up a beer I've only had once, on that trip, on Untappd) 2006 it was still pretty dumpy, but by 2011 it was pretty nicely built up around the park, with breweries and restaurants. Hope for Citi. I managed to never see a game. toured in 2006 but went to Tijuana instead of a game. 2009 the Padres weren't home when I was there. (for a really ridiculous start-up interview) and in 2011 was there for a conference with my wife in early October so season over. But you can see into the park from the outside and that little league field and sandbox and all that. There are now huge skyscrapers which I imagine can see into the park. The gaslight district is fun, good eats. There's always good beer somewhere close, or you could take a ride up to Stone's World Bistro (something I highly recommend).

Minute Maid Park is probably next unless I stumble down to Nationals Park next season for some reason.
  25. Well yeah, which is why we don't really need a fantasy or a rankings subforum. but like, if there are 15 threads a week on one topic, say music, especially in a forum so vague as to be 'non-baseball' why not have a subforum for it? or say separate out the live threads from the one's that are more general. I know we're limited by the structure, but a "reply as new thread" thing would probably get more threads created.
