  1. I mean, pretty much all pitchers get better and more velocity in the pen, and Harvey's velocity has been down and down and down. So this very well could help. I still think his primary issue is command but there's certainly the argument that he had never had command and velocity helped him get away with it, so maybe the reliever boost will work wonders.

These are all fixable things. The talent is certainly there in flashes. He'll get better. It's a bit of an indictment of our minor league system that these things weren't addressed at a lower level. And a bit of an indictment of our major league team that we couldn't give him more time to work out those kinks in AA or AAA rather than at Citi Field. fans were absolutely killing the Mets last year for not getting him up earlier. it's funny. took his second walk the other day. Sometimes you need to get up to really take that next step though. I mean, when everything is an eminently hittable meatball in AAA it's not always easy to learn to lay off them, nor is it always productive. If he could get back to that 8% he had in AA that'd be nice.
  3. Maybe Harvey still figures out a way to be successful, it's only a few starts this year after all, but I thought the fresh start with the fresh regime would be evident, and it's just not.

  5. btw, SMG, if you're paying attention you're over roster size.
  6. His pitches still have movement, even very similar movement, though his velocity has come down every year ,even from last year (but it's a cold small sample still for this year) Mainly, he's working slower and guys are making more out of the zone contact. suggesting that he's just not fooling them or the pitch isn't breaking as much as usual so it doesn't drop away? But the movement seems similar so perhaps he's just missing his spots. There does seem to be some indication that he's not getting his changeup as low as he usually does. Difference between crushing it at the bottom of the zone and swinging over it? it's such a game of inches. The whole difference here might just be that previously Harvey could pinpoint the ball to a 3in circle and now he can only hit a 5in circle.
  7. I definitely like the idea of a corral of 9 pitchers to use to get 27 outs over the idea of defined roles or the more typical turn-based style of bullpening.

Zimmerman looked dead in the water prior to his big hit last night and now his 2 HRs today. shockingly, skipping Spring Training might not actually be a good idea.
  9. yes, and the reason some of the guys behind him didn't have as high totals is because Bruce made outs at higher than the league average rate, suppressing base-runners. If you magically gave all of those Bruce AB to Granderson or Conforto or Cespedes or Nimmo, they'd likely have HIGHER totals.
  10. the Mets have 5 outfielders and he's the worst one and the most limited, that seems to suck for me, even if it's not Tebow level of sucking. 41Forever wrote: 41Forever wrote: Last year Bruce had 36 homers -- tied for 15th in the majors -- and 101 RBI, tied for 18th best. That doesn't suck. RBIs mean nothing in player evaluation, and the HR are nice but he still made more than average amount of outs to counter that one skill. RBI reflect that he had a hit -- or at least put the ball in play (or walked with the bases loaded) -- with people on base. Last night we were 0-9 with people in scoring position. I would have liked some RBI. I would've too, and the best way to get one is to get the best hitters on the team up, and that's not Bruce. Bruce having RBI is a direct result of the rest of the team being good in front of him.

  13. what's his patent number for these hot streaks? I mean, everyone's streaky.since 2016, Conforto and Cespedes have had better hit streaks. TJ Rivera has had similar streaks. As has Rene Rivera, James Loney, Juan Lagares and Jose Reyes. Asdrubal Cabrera has had three. So yes, a professional baseball player is capable of having a hot streak and providing a lot of offense during it. That doesn't make him not the 5th best OF on the Mets.

Yes, and maybe I'm wrong but in other scenarios you'd be the, "meh, it's only 16 games so I'm not going to get my shorts in a knot just yet" guy. I checked and you were indeed against the signing and I'll give you that. On the other hand, I 'Expected' a good season and I'm rooting for that. Not everything in baseball can be explained on a spreadsheet, otherwise they could just run sim games on Watson and not bother wasting 3 1/2 hours everyday playing the actual games. yes, my argument here isn't that Bruce has been meh this season, it's that he's not good, period. I've been against it every time we've signed him. Sure, baseball's not played on a spreadsheet, but the mountains of data certainly strongly inform the idea that Bruce's ceiling is basically league average. At least he has a 13.6 BB% so far this year, but THAT is probably just small sample stuff.
  15. d'Kong76 wrote: Yes, see what happens. Yesterday you said, "Jay Bruce sucks." He doesn't suck and is signed for three years for substantial money. He's not going to ride the pine. You're only optimistic Mets fan and Mr. Small Sample Size when it fits who you like for whatever reasons. Mr. small sample size? that's a real thing for one, and the other is that I'm referencing the entire juiced ball era (which really juices Bruce's one skill to make him better) as the sample. Nimmo's sample is smaller, but it includes last year. I'm including Cespedes history too, which is why I rank him above Bruce. Lagares is less obvious, depends how you feel about defense, but fine, call Bruce the 4th outfielder if you like. Since the start of 2016 Brandon Nimmo (and Conforto, and Cespedes, and Granderson, and Lagares) have been worth more fWAR as a Met than Jay Bruce.
  16. d'Kong76 wrote: You need to chill on Bruce for a few weeks and see what happens. see what happens? he's 31. He's not going to 'break out' and be something other than what he is. Unless you mean Nimmo and Lagares and Conforto will suddenly suck or get hurt?
  17. We need to stop playing our 5th best outfielder, Bruce, more than the other guys. And Cespedes needs to get going. And Rosario. Finding a catcher in april is gonna be hard. Lobaton..well, he sucks. sometimes he has good years/stretches. Maybe Nido has some talent. Best we can hope for is that Plawecki's injury is in fact minor and that his recent history this year and last year is what he'll give us going forward.
  18. I wouldn't overpay for Realmuto, but basically either would help as long as you avoid '15 Ramos.
  19. If deGrom pitches a complete game first, three-way tie between Hahn, Grimm and Seawolf. If not, Hahn wins.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: "Ceetar": fresh arm -- no more or less fresh than anyone else's after two weeks of the season they're a good 5 IP -- well, there's that I suppose he's close -- close to what ... close to ML ready after his 4.22 ERA / 1.59 WHIP of a season in A-ball? Look, I'm not putting down the move. Like I said, I have no opinion of the guy. But at the same time let's not mentally 'grass-is-greener' him into a reliable reliever based on 3 April outings in 40 degree weather. It's likely just a short-term thing anyway. Be cool if he were to pitch well enough to make them keep him up. I think he hasn't pitched in a few days, so fresh in the sense of 'rested'. And close as in "Binghamton is right there and Vegas isn't"
  21. fresh arm they're a good 5 IP. he's close.
  22. bad assumption, as Bruce sucks. He might be the third or fourth best 1B option and he might be the 5th best OF option. I'm more concerned about Rosario. At least Gonzalez is walking and not striking out. And even Bruce is a better backup option there than what we got at short.
  23. he's sucked this year and if he continues to suck it'll suck to use him. He's not striking anyone out, walking everyone, giving up nothing but fly balls. He feels roughly like Oliver Perez though, otherwise. Basically unhittable but often you get on base anyway. this year has been straight garbage though. no one is swinging out of the zone, and they're making a ton of contact in the zone. He's not missing bats. it's small sample stuff, but it's not encouraging. His velocity is down on everything except his changeup.
  24. I doubt the Rays are necessarily desperate to get rid of him, nor do I think, despite what Laura may think, that they've decided they can't compete in the division this season and shouldn't try. (of course, a 4 game losing streak on top of a start is bringing that to a head rather quickly)
