you'd have to think washington's getting re-hired. I think bluejays mightn't be primetime enough for bobby v and hopefully he's pissed off enough at the marlins not to bother going there. Would any new GM have enough balls to take Bobby V on?
  2. nobody who has ever said something like that (abolish the union) has ever satisfactorily explained to me why they think a workers rights are somehow less valid because there salaries are high. let us kid nobody, the only people who gain from a reduction in player salaries are the owners. The owners in an oligopoly - do people not get that ? this isn't a market competitive situation. I'm being totally honest when I say that there is no way that any 'sport' would be allowed treat its employees in the manner the MLB, NFL, NBA, MLS and NHL treat there employees in the Europen Union, they'd simply be laughed at and have the book thrown at them for the restriction of freedom of movement of labour.
  3. promotion & relegation means rewards success & punishing failure. I've gone through this a few times so won't go over the whole thing again here but one of the biggest differences between football & american sports is that NOBODY gives up in football because they can't win, it is hugely important for them to improve their team as the season goes on or they play in a less attractive league with less revenue the following season.
  4. tbh I won't really notice one way or the other I love football (as in soccer) that's what I play and what I care about however, the mrs and her family from Mayo care plenty more (she won all - ireland medals as a youngster) and because they're mayo i generally get to laugh.
  5. how bad's the rain delay
  6. i just poured another glass of wine ! but it's midnight here !
  7. while i don't agree with the 3 catchers I agree with every other bench spot. We've got 2 guys playing regularly in the OF who play CF and two guys playing regularly in the IF who play SS. We don't need a back up at either - the backup is on the field. Pinch Running ? It ain't worth carrying Feliciano/Martinez to Pinch Run it's not like they're Dave Roberts.

  9. seriously, I'm glad, I just hope the mets tell him to go fuck himself while giving his poor partner plenty of support.

how's about an apology to the person who you took your childish anger out on seriously, I've so little time for people who punch people that it's not true, it's a fucking coward who resorts to fists. we had a situation in our match on saturday where this lumbering prick punched one of our players because he didn't like the jostling he was getting. The guy was 30 or so and 6'2 the full back he punched was 5'7 and 20. The worst of it was I saw the coward looking to see was the ref watching before he did it - he saw that wasn't and then gave a young footballer a bloody mouth, nose and chipped a tooth. There's never a defense for physical violence, never.

    that's not right either.

y'know what's worse. what's worse is that being a fucking obnoxious bully who beats people up isn't something that allows them to void his contract. Surely this should come under some clause of total wankerdom and they should just be able to throw him out. I could be wrong but NOTHING i've read has suggested that's even an option.

    19 losses

i would maintain that my thinking is at least part sculpted by the fact that i'm rarely awake for the end of a game.
  14. that's how many more we can afford I reckon, I know it might seem unusual to think about it this way round, but in my head that's how i'm loooking at. 90 wins in the NL East gets you to the playoffs 6 times out of the last 10 so i'm reckoning that we'll be in the shake up as long as we don't lose more then 72 games. Still though, 19 isn't very many when we're so good at snatching them from the jaws of victory.
  15. wow. that'd be a whole lot of fun if it happened. Meche has a no trade clause though.

Gardner to centre, Frenchy in against a lefty would be a .220 ops upgrade. of course if we could just stick with the program and start him instead of pagan against lefties or occassinally to give carlos a rest, it'd be fine. don't get me wrong; i'm not saying he's perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but the question is probably are we better eating the money and bringing up feliciano or trying to make the best use of him that's possible.

  18. but could his *vast* experience not have told him that this might be a problem before he traded Jason Isringhousen for him. I'm generally of the opinion that people don't get to positions like GM due to luck or through ineptitude - that more often then not someone has worked hard and showed talent to get promoted but even I've very little time for Steve Phillips at this stage
  19. I just think it's pretty crazy to expect him to be useful from the right side vs righties when he's spent his career *not* hitting them from that side. I'd prefer to DL him retro to before all-star and see how rest helps.

  21. funnily enough I think Omar's got a pretty good record of trawling through the bargain buckets for pitching gold, it's when he settles for 'lower risk' totally proven mediocrity that he's got burned.
  22. he's the blue jay's rod barajas (funnily enough considering rod's last home) Career OBP of .300 and SLG of .400 - it's just that barajas has come back to earth earlier. This is very likely to be a bad move.
  23. seriously, this is as good as we could get. He's not signing an extension with anyone still technically owned by Tom total fuckwit leveraged buyout Hicks, so if we want him next year we can get him for a draft pick and shit loads of dough. the skankees won't sign him having been publically humiliated cause of sherman. (well that last bit might be wrong, but I'm dreaming !)

MLB's as far from a free market system as you can get (except maybe for the NFL & the NBA)
