  1. Whatever happened to Rusty's restaurant? I never went there myself.
  2. "Dressed in a suit he looked like a gray flannel section of the Berlin wall and at least as immovable." That's a great line!
  3. Now that I've reached the Top 20 I've decided to start a thread for each of these players and my memories of them. Rusty Staub is one of my favorite Mets and among the reasons I was drawn to the Mets over the Evil Empire in my youthful days when one could go either way. How could you not like a big lumbering redheaded guy who could hit? Of course, I'm too young to remember Staub in his prime albeit raised on stories of his role in the 1973 pennant winning team. My own memories are of Rusty as the premier pinch hitter as well as that game where he was swapped from right-to-left field and back again depending on the batter (and if I recall correctly the ball was hit to him anyway). Staub always struck me as an affable good guy as well as an excellent player, so three cheers for Rusty!!!

  5. In More Book Lust, public librarian Nancy Pearl makes the following reccomendation that Scarlett at least will appreciate:"Michael Lewis's Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game looks at the Oakland Athletics, on of the least wealthy teams in Major League Baseball, and analyzes why they win year after year. (This book turned me into a big fan of the Oakland A's, which is not a good thing to be when you live in Seattle)." p.74
  6. When I attended the Bermuda Cup Match the fans passed a hat for one of the cricketers for scoring 50 runs, but I've never seen it done at a baseball game.
  7. Recruit Dr. Dooby for the Crane Pool now!!!

  9. I'm good at kickball.
  10. Suck Suck Suck!

  12. I hope this becomes the all-purpose make shit up thread.
  13. I always wondered if they had to debate whether to nominate Jaye Davidson for best supporting actor or best supporting actress for The Crying Game.
  14. Ah, don't you just love free market capitalism?
  15. Can't you switch cable providers?
  16. He looks relatively more relaxed in this photo than in the one JD had for his avatar.
  17. I just saw Syriana and would say George Clooney was a leading actor not a supporting actor. How are these things determined in ensemble films of this sort?
  18. I don't get it. Omar Minaya (played by Roland Gift of the Fine Young Cannibals) wears an Expos' jersey, weeps, changes to a Mets jersey and plays with dolls. Huh?!?!
  19. Interesting book. I read it for my web course at grad school. It's amusing that Krug sites Amazon.com as an example of a web site with great usability but by the time I read the book Amazon had redesigned their site obliterating what Krug liked about it.
  20. Thanks Bret. I've been nowhere near the computer today nor have I finished reading this lenghty tome.
  21. I think Mookie got married on the field in Jackson.
  22. Edgy DC wrote: I was scratching my head to come up with a Buffalo/Indianapolis game that would have Mookie and Edgardo on the same team. That's the out-of-town scoreboard for the International League. ] Great shot. Could be bigger. Oh, I just made it smaller so it wouldn't f'up peoples' browsing. Maybe I can crop around Mookie and enlarge that, but I like being able to see his name on the scoreboard.
  23. Along with my new computer I have a new printer/scanner I just installed today and got to test it out on this picture of Mookie Wilson: This is from the Mets annual exhibition game against the Tides at Harbor Park in 1998. In the late innings, then Mets coach Mookie Wilson got an at bat much to the crowds' approval, although sadly the Mookster struck out (he still looked pretty darn fit though). I took this with a point and shoot camera, nothing fancy like Iubitul has, but had pretty good seats behind home plate so Mookie still comes out decently well.
