  1. Tacky and tastless (and funny)
  2. Much anger has this one.
  3. Steinbrenner stars in weepy tv movie.
  4. Just finished:Abraham Lincoln suffered two major depressive episodes as a young adult and chronic depression throughout his life. As opposed to the modern day belief that depression is an illness that must be cured to live a normal life, the author contends that Lincoln's depression actually helped mold him into the type of person who could handle the crises of secession and the Civil War as well as he did. This fascinating and illuminating book taught me a lot about Lincoln and his times as well as mental health in general.Just started:Mahler writes about New York CIty in 1977 focused around the battle for mayor between Ed Koch and Mario Cuomo and the battles at Yankee Stadium between Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson. So far the book is bringing back memories of the New York of my childhood and making me a bit nostalgic. Not that I particularly miss widespread crime and arson, I just think that some good parts of old school New York were lost in the yuppification of the 80's and 90's.
  5. ]One goal is to upgrade Willets Point Does this mean the Mets will make sure I always fly first class?
  6. 'bout freakin' time!
  7. Made me laugh. Get some sleep if you can.
  8. Failing to get Jeter, they can always get Timmy O'Neil Perez.
  9. Bret Sabermetric wrote: ="Willets Point"]when your basically calling us idiots. You might interpret some of my language as "basically" calling you anything you choose, Willets, but I haven't actually called anyone anything offensive today, for example, but have been called a dickhead (by you) a shithead, and various other choice bits of abuse. Well, the actual quote I didn't call you a dickhead directly, I had you calling yourself a dickhead. At any rate you should know by now that "caustic fucktard", "dickhead," etc. are terms of love and affection here. Seriously though, I'm not trying to pick a fight, but what's bugging you? You seem extra angry these past two days and I don't think its because I called you a dickhead. OE: Added a "not" before "trying to pick a fight". Maybe it was a Freudian slip.
  10. Bret Sabermetric wrote: Folks, it's just my opinion, which you're free to disregard, but I don't think Willie has much backbone, much vision, much intelligence, or much of a chance to become an excellent manager with those handicaps. I'd like to turn ths one around and ask why you think, on ther basis of what you saw last year, that he IS especially wise, or perceptive, or courageous, because I must have missed it. He isn't, its just your particular hypothetical was for a situation that wouldn't distinguish Randolph much from any other manager, thus not being very good as a basis for Randolph's particular weaknesses. That plus that in your best "caustic fucktard" manner you've been particularly hostile and pissed a lot of people off the past couple of days means that most CPF'ers really are dissuaded from arguing on merit when your basically calling us idiots.
  11. Artistic differences?
  12. I really enjoyed Matlack as a kid, a great vehicle for Andy Griffith full of courtroom drama with a touch of whimsy. Oh wait that's Matlock. Here's the rub of being a "younger" Mets fan. I have no memories of Jon Matlack (you could say I'm Mat-lacking in that area). It's interesting despite being the 19th greatest Met of all time, a ROY, and a star pitcher for 7 years that there isn't more lore about Jon Matlack passed down to folks like me who weren't able to see him play. Maybe it's because he pitched in the shadow of Seaver and Koosman and maybe because he wasn't on the 69 championship team nor lingered long enough to be associated with the great Met teams of the 80's. Add to all that he had the Fred Gwynne/John Kerry long-face look (then again that should make him distinctive). Anyhow, here's to Jon Matlack, a prime example of the Mets' history of great pitching.
  13. Bret's position here is basically "People are prejudiced against me because I'm a total dickhead - wah, wah!!!"
  14. I've always hated (the unsilent majority of) Yankee fans more than the team itself. No matter how "indifferent" they are to us, they're still pretty obnoxious and childish.
  15. The Yankee-Mets rivalry is rather tame compared to Celtic-Rangers. I'm glad he didn't hit you over the head with a beer bottle.
  16. I got big balls Big ole balls Big as grapefruits Big as pumpkins Yes sir, yes sir And on my really good days They swell to the size of small dogs My balls are as big as small dogs

  18. New additions to our Featured Archives thread hall of fame include a couple of celebrity encounters (Valadius meets Al Leiter, we all meet Steve Zabriskie) and some silly fun started by Bret. I've also begun a new NBF archive called the Music Archives, basically a place to store music discussions like the Band-Ladder Challenge and the "One" contest. I don't want to follow the precedent of the Film and Book forums here and have a special music only forum (for fear of making the NBF a bleak and empty place), but I do think it will be helpful to have a place to make it easy to dig up old threads.
  19. I suck. I started the book club this year yet I can't finish this book.
  20. I have more in common with Glavine here than with Wright.
  21. I used to live a little over a mile from Tod's Point beach (officially Greenwich Point). Being from Stamford (aka the great unwashed hoi polloi) I couldn't get a beach permit, but it was pretty damn easy to sneak in.
  22. Someone retell the Bud/Seaver "I'll call you..." story from the '86 series. I can't remember all the details but it was a great story.
  23. Wow is he old enough to drive in that photo?
  24. Seems that cooby is more pro-Spikes now than when this was previously discussed.
  25. TheOldMole wrote: Just a little publicity for the Spinners. Not as good, IMHO, as the Jack Kerouac bobblehead doll. Did they really do that? That's pretty damn funny. Lowell loves to play up being the birth place of the painter Whistler and the writer Kerouac although I think both of them got out of town as soon as they could.
