  1. If the Pirates were the Mets, we'd be wondering why the hell Brubaker stayed in to pitch to Smith. And to Alonso. That was nuts.
  2. Edgy MD wrote: Well, he tries to draw the parallel with detailed points. But the points are meaningless. They're too specious even to be clever. Mays went into the army as a hugely promising young player and came out as a great one. Elvis went in at the peak of his career and came out as someone who made shitty movies--and still made great music, but only when he felt like it. For Mays "holed up in California" just means he played in San Francisco. For Elvis it means he was stuck making those movies. For Mays "artistic decline" means he was an aging athlete but still a hell of a player into his forties. For Elvis it means he'd got his head and body so fucked up he could barely function most of the time. For Mays "employed by casinos" means he took some easy money when he couldn't play baseball anymore. For Elvis it meant he played music for people--the one point where Mays comes off sadder in comparison. They were both transformative. But in completely different ways. And great as Elvis was, I think the comparison is demeaning to Mays, who never betrayed his talent.
  3. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=70816 time=1625856465 user_id=68] The Athletic hands out its half season awards. Jake deGrom gets the half-season NL MVP and Cy Young awards, with the added comment that if the season were to end today and deGrom didn't win the NL MVP award, then no pitcher ever deserves to win the MVP. NL half-season's LVP (Least Valuable Player) is also a Met, Francicsco Lindor. And pat me on the back for anticipating that one as I worked through the article. The AL's LVP is Matt Harvey.
  4. What does Elvis have to do with anything? I love Elvis, but how does he compare in any meaningful way to Wilie Mays, except in being very famous at the same time? Is there a corollary to Godwin's law that says if you know you're not supposed to talk about Nazis you'll end up talking about Elvis instead?
  5. There is a point at which I'm willing to give up on baseball, to say this isn't baseball anymore and I just don't care. Automatic intentional walks wasn't it. The extra-inning runner wasn't either. The universal DH probably won't be. But seven-inning games, or three-pitch walks, or moving the pitcher's mound back, might just about do it for me. I know, I should have quit back in 1887, when they went from six balls to five for a walk. Or 1893, when they moved the pitching distance back from fifty feet. Or 1920, when they started replacing the ball every time a fly landed on it or something. But every man's got his limits. Yes, just enforce time limits. Every other measure is bullshit, and most of them don't even accomplish anything.
  6. That's a quality win. Is it possible the Mets are actually a pretty good team?
  7. Edgy MD wrote: There are just gaps in this Yankee defense we haven't been seeing against NL East teams. Well, the Phillies.
  8. Chad ochoseis wrote: I just noticed "Almora" is an anagram for "Alomar". Pretty obvious. Just never thought about it before. Also for "amoral."
  9. Stick your elbow out, Michael.
  10. Not that it's ever going to make much sense, but how would you do a proper Mets Abbey Road shirt? I think it would have to be particular teams, like 1986 with Keith as John, Carter as Paul, Mookie as Ringo, and Gooden as George. Or something like that. And of course Seaver gets to be Paul in 1969 and 1973.
  11. 11) Keith should be barefoot.
  12. They look like the grounds crew at a non-major PGA tournament.
  13. Who throws the second pitch?
  14. Both those pitches to Soto look very close, and one of the calls favored the Mets. The pitch to Smith was a bad call, but it also favored the Mets. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be indignant about, other than that Danley's strike zone was pretty inconsistent throughout.
  15. Edgy MD wrote: Hey Mets, make contact when Guilorme is running. I thought you called that before it happened, which would have been awesome. But I was just behind by a minute or so.
  16. Where have these Mets been? What's gotten into Peterson and Lindor?
  17. When did the Cubs sign Goose Gossage?
  18. If there seems to be something wrong with me, and the doctor says he can't find anything, I don't get much relief from that. I want the doctor to tell me what's wrong, and whether it's serious or not. This is the fourth time this year doctors have said he's fine.
  19. Christ, man. Something's breaking down. Maybe figure it out before you go out there again and strain some other part of your body?
  20. Stock got lucky. Bad strike three call.
  21. Dwight and Sid could hit, couldn't they? Sid was a great athlete stuck in a fat man's body.
  22. It feels like DeGrom has been things his body really isn't meant to do. Maybe he needs to dial it down somehow and give up being Superman. DeGrom 2018 should be enough for anyone.
  23. This is insane. But I can't see him going more than five unless he brings his pitch count way down.
  24. He wasn't out by that much. I mean, he was clearly out, and it was a dumb play, but his hand was like three inches from the plate when McCann tagged him.
