His prime didn't last much longer, but his first full season with them matches up very well with his best years in Minnesota. I guess Saberhagen was on the downslope, with trouble staying healthy, but he gave them one Cy Young quality season, and he was only 30 then.
  3. Richie Hebner was a hockey player. Another low ball hitter.
  4. I hope he brings the mojo.
  5. Speaking of overmanaging. Even if you lose your starter in the second and the game goes twelve innings, eight relievers is a bit much. And the worst of them is the one who had to go two innings, lost the game, and made the last out. That takes some serious short-term thinking.
  6. A friend of my in-laws is from Chisholm and remembers Doc Graham. The idea that someone could become a mythical figure just because he happened to appear in one major league box score must seem pretty strange to anyone who actually knew the man.

  8. MFS62 isn't kidding. Ashburn and Coleman were seventh and eighth on the team in home runs in 1962. Ashburn had a career-high 7. He hit as many home runs at the Polo Grounds that year, 6, as he did in his entire career in Philadelphia. (Over half his career home runs were at the Polo Grounds.)
  9. It's too defensive. Too, well, guarded. It doesn't sound like something fun to be a part of. And “city of fire and water” sounds like the time the river caught on fire.
  10. All right, we've got a fighting chance to win this thing.
  11. Gonna be a long game. I'll check back in an hour or so. Hopefully the first inning will be over by then.
  12. Who gets the win if the manager sneaks back into the dugout with a mustache?
  13. Frayed Knot wrote: There were also multiple elections on the Boston side (including old pal Kevin Plawecki) so I'm betting there was some serious griping going on before, during, and after. You mean multiple erections, right?
  14. I wouldn't wear a team jersey. But I do look covetously sometimes at the Ebbets Field Flannels historical jerseys and wonder if it's worth spending $200 on a Federal League 1914 St. Louis Terriers home jersey, or an 1895 Cleveland Spiders road jersey. Probably not. One thing I would definitely wear, if anyone made it and if I could justify the $500 it would probably cost, is one of those cardigans that players used to wear in the early twentieth century instead of jackets. Those were some beautiful sweaters.
  15. Davis grounding into the fourth double play of the game after two home runs feels weirdly appropriate.
  16. Two traditional blue-and-orange caps. I must have forgotten I had one already. And buried away somewhere, my Little League jersey. My league used major league team names, and I was on the Mets. By good luck, not choice. Blue sleeves and collar, skyline logo on the front, hardware store logo on the back.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: In Davy Jonhson's Bats, he writes about Joe Sambito. The Mets try to farm him out and he comes to Davy and asks if they're just going to dump him, then dump him. Davy, trying to establish his dominion, says, "Look, I've released three veteran pitchers already this season, and if I wanted to release you, I would. Now go down and get into shape." The three pitchers he was referring to were Mike Torrez (his opening day starter), Craig Swan, and Dirty Dick Tidrow. I guess we're still waiting on Sambito pitching his way into shape. Good story. Except they picked up Sambito in 1985.
  18. They're Hunter Pence pants.
  19. When you can watch any player on any team any time you want to--if you pay for it, anyway--it's a bit less special seeing a select group of them on the same field. And the game itself has always seemed kind of pointless. What exactly are you proving by trotting out sixty players for one at bat or one inning? I've never seen one of the games all the way through, and it's been years since I even tuned in to see my guys show off their Mets uniforms. Which they can't even do anymore. I'm also still annoyed that Mazzilli wasn't the All-Star MVP in 1979. Screw the All-Star Game.
  20. It pisses me off, but the Mets deserved to lose that one.
  21. I'd rather not win that way, but what can you do.
  22. I'm falling in love with Jonathan Villar, and I don't care who knows it.
  23. This game very nearly went south in the second inning. And again in the fifth. And now look where we are.
